Not a fan of this proposal. Clarification though. They aren't saying you can't race a road car. They are proposing you can't take emission control equipment off (or alter it) to race even if you never drive the car on public roads again. The 67 Cuda is safe at least.

It's still going to put a major impact on the racing industry, in turn providing less options for us to buy. Most of the performance shops out there use racing cars for tunes and whatnot and trickle it down to the customer. This can potentially put businesses and people out of work.
I doubt the EPA is doing this for money (they'll be shooting themselves in the foot if that's the case). I want to theorize that this is a step to force manufactures to "go green" and research more on hybrids/electric cars. There's nothing wrong with those vehicles, but I still enjoy my unfiltered diesels and loud straight-piped race cars.

The race industry is pretty big, I'm sure this isn't going to go as smoothly as whatever the EPA thinks or is even ready for.

even if it's passed, they aren't capable of much enforcement. They aren't a law enforcement agency last I checked
Regardless, maybe on the bright side it will drive better emissions control devices that even less impact on performance. I personally don't mind having a car that dosent stink and dosent puff soot all over my white car. For the cost of a few hp. However egr is of the devil |

i just read about a Land Rover TD engine that takes the Egr gases from after the DPF. Now that would help reduce intake fouling.

SEMA will fight it and win. The aftermarket industry is about a 1/4 trillion dollars. Their lawyers will have it thrown out for technical procedural errors. Not to worry folks.
It is actually EPA's way of trying to counteract new rulings on copyright protections on software, including OEM ECUs. If things go according to plan, very shortly, modifying the software in an ECU that you own will not be the copyright infringement that companies have claimed. I don't think that makes it any better. A lot of various interest groups have lost a lot of freedom to operate with a "it only affects xx, not a big deal" type attitude. In 15 years those 2018 models will be all the cars you see on the racetrack, whether it applies to older cars or not is moot because in the future those 2018 and newer cars ARE the old cars.
