Im running 235/265 R18 Vred Vortis - very pleased - excellent grip. Has Sessantas before and I think the Vortis are better

Fair point but for me, my driving (don't need ultra high performance as the car's the family wagon) they are perfect. Got mine super cheap at Costco on a deal which also helped.

Not saying Vortis are scrimping, it was more a general observation that people who have high powered, performance cars that then get budget tyres are asking for trouble.

2) I like "fat" Nascar tyre look - dont like skinny tyres 3) The slightly larger diam fills up the wheel arch space more - making it look lower than it is. 4) what i hadnt bargained on was the big increase in rear end grip - much less wheelspin when pulling away hard - a surprising big +

I was about to order them for approx £152 each on camskill when I spoke to my local tyre shop.
The guy in there is a sound guy and we've spent a lot of time discussing tyres etc. He said he could get me Continental SC's for circa £170 fitted which was a bargain in my opinion. Interestinly as I was about to order them he mentioned he has ran a brand called "Nexen" for a while and he was singing their praises. I decided to trust his opinion and he got me two Nexen SU1's in 255/30/19 fitted for £250 all in (£125 a tyre supplied and fitted). I must say they have transformed the car compared the the BS Runflats. It is so quiet and abosrbs so much more shock. I have only covered about 300 miles so far so I can't comment much more. I can say however I am 100% satisifed with them thus far! I'm sure people will probably judge me for running this non premium brand but they have excellent reviews online and I can see why! I am so happy to see the back of those BS run flats. |

For me the issue is the price difference is tiny compared with the overall running costs of the car and how long you'll be stuck with those tyres.
You paid £250 for the nexens, which is expensive as they're only about £100 each to buy online, and 50quid to fit two tyres is nuts. Garages always pull that crap because they can maximise their profit by selling you the cheaper tyre, which is costing them a LOT less, for what seems like a reasonable saving over the premium brand. However shopping around you realise you can get the premium brand online for a good price and get yourself the better tyre for not much more. You could have bought eagle F1's online and had them fitted for about £300, and they're one of the best tyres you can buy. Ok its 50quid more, but you set out prepared to spend that much anyway. Budget tyres always have a drawback. Sometimes its grip, sometimes its tyre life or it can be road noise or fuel consumption etc etc. The really bad ones can have multiple categories where they perform woefully, the better ones can do fairly well in most categories. |
