UK guys - RHD turbo replacement DIY or no?

Hi guys. I'm based in the UK (london) I've ordered a set of hybrids as my oem turbos are on their way out.

How big of a job is it to DIY the turbo replacement on RHD? Has anyone done it without removing the subframe? I've done everything myself so far including downpipes, exhaust, custom intercooler pipes etc. Its just peace of mind when you do it properly yourself

Or can anyone recommend an experienced garage who has done this job previously? Preferably south of UK. I have Darren woods in mind purely because they've done this job in the past. Any other recommendations?

If you have done the downpipes yourself then that is half the job. Dropping the subframe isn't really a big issue and will give you loads more room. Birds would be the obvious choice for anyone down south. But DW will be cheaper and have done plenty.

Birds would be my recommendation.

Either that or someone like Iridium Engineering near Southampton, his workmanship and attention to detail is the best I've ever seen/experienced.

Go to Darren Wood then. Great bunch of lads. You'll be in and out the same day so only ta few quid on fuel to get there and back.

Just had 6 new injectors, new coil packs and ngk spark plugs.
Still had a lumpy idle and misfire, ran a diagnostic and compression test. Cylinder 3 failed compression test, the new injector was black and had its rubber seal burnt off.
Noticed there was play when the injector was seated.
So currently the cylinder head is being taken off and sent to a specialist to see if they can repair or rebuild if not then a replacement will need to be sourced.

Whilst it's there the engine will be out, my hexon rr600 should be arriving soon along with the hexon inlets, they will be fitted with the engine out.
Also stage 2 LPFP and throttle body injection with upgraded fuel line and 15psi hobbs switch.
Catless downpipes will be fitted too, also having the rear subframe bushings replaced with powerflex black.
Might get the m3 guide arms and rear upper links too.

So it won't be back any time soon, but it's in the best of hands. Injector, coil packs and plugs just cost me around £1500 parts and labour, this work will cost a fortune but at least it will be done. Looking forward to it.

Sounds like a nightmare. Head work is always a money pit.
I think my wait is about 4 weeks for the same parts. Thinking of doing the work myself but if I don't get time I will be handing it over to DW.
What are you using to control the PI? I'm running meth at the mo but considering going down the PI route and using the JB4 integration to manage it.

Yeah it's a nightmare buddy, it's meant to be my daily driver, but it's been in the garage more than I've driven it myself. Costing me an absolute fortune! Engine situation was unexpected, but it could be worse I guess.

I had jb4 and I've taken it off. Will be using mhd to flash a tune from wedgeperformance. I could of had the work done locally but don't want anything else to go wrong and just want it done right. I'm not getting port injection, I think that's abit overkill for fueling unless you have the rr700's or big single turbo. We don't have access to ethanol either so it shouldn't be needed. I'm getting throttle body injection, it's controlled through the hobbs switch. If I was going for port injection I'd get the AD engineering with haltech controller. If using jb4 you still need to buy another module to control PI.

That's not bad considering injectors are £200 each.

I thought TBI was for those struggling with high E quantities..?
I think for our (UK 99) fuel we will be octane limited no matter what we do.
I wanted to keep the meth so was going to stay with JB4 but the more I think about it I am getting swayed to a Wedge tune. He seems to have these 600's dialed in perfect for Auto.

The turbo's are increasing air flow, with more air we need more fuel. The TBI is enough to increase fueling alongside the stage 2 LPFP. If we were using high quantities of ethanol we'd need port injection, this is because ethanol burns at a quicker rate than our fuel.

The meth could help with octane and iats, if I were to go down the meth route I'd use an aem meth kit, as advised by Ken from wedgeperformance.

Just received my turbos, probably won't be using Darren woods due to the 4 hour drive each way, and also the fact that they quoted £1080 Inc vat for labour for turbo replacement + inlets. Still need to decide what to do...
