If the battery hasn't been replaced, it puts a hell of a stress on the coils.
I suggest replacing all coils spark plugs and battery at the same time for reliability, save on labor. Of course your mechanic will say that no need to change all. He wants you to come back and pay the labor. Do the math: if you pay 1h labor for each coil replaced or if you pay once 2h labor to replace all of them including spark plugs and battery. You also have to count your time lost at the garage. He is a mechanic and wants to make $....

Yup seems like I am in the same boat. I just had my second ignition coil replaced with in 3 months which was causing miss fireing when doing hard excelleration.
I have said why dont they replace all of them since it is evident they are going progressively. I was advised to contact BMW to see if they can get it approved. Its the same method they do, the customers request may stand stronger. |

How do you know which Coil is deffective?, I have checked with a local guy who said the code seemed to be for a defective coil Cyl 5, are the codes Cyl specific or just pinpoint to the area and further troubleshooting is required?? he also quoted $150 to replace at a discounted price (which seems high based on what I read here).. are they really that easy to replace, is this a DIY Job, but more importantly - how will i be sure which Coil is faulty??
Thanks, S |

Had my first coil go bad last night (cyl #5) at 105,500 miles.
Had it fixed at BMW Direct Service. Just the one. Will have all others, and all plugs, done (for the second time--have not been done since 50K miles) at the next service. |

OP - Are you sure they replaced your HEAD GASKET? Or Valve Cover Gasket? The latter is much more common...in fact, I don't ever recall hearing someone having replaced their head gaskets here.
Glad you found an honest Indy. The dealership would have surely replaced all six coils + their full labor rate rounded up and gave you some BS reason for the issue. $40 compared to $400 is a big difference lol For your reference, I've only had to change one coil in my 8 years of owning this same e92. And that was 4 years ago or something. |
