Getting New DME - once received via dealer/tischer can I use WinkPF to program?

My DME is toast. Replaced mosfets and I think I damaged the board or something as it wouldn't even start or communicate with my cobb or MHD. I should have taken it to a tv shop to have them do it. Sick to my stomach over it but it is what it is.

Anyways... Tischer says they have to order the MSD80 from the BMW who'll code it to my VIN. Then they'll send it to me to install. My question is...should I have a shop program it or is it easy to program via WinkPF (or possibly have someone on here do it remote?) ?

I don't want to risk f'ing up the new DME so I'm leaning towards taking the car to my bmw mechanic/shop and just have them do it so I don't brick it.

Any advice is appreciated.

Interesting. This makes me kinda nervous. How would I install and is it 100% legit to work with everything in my car like comfort access etc??

Thank you for the info, btw... really helpful. New DME is coming out to close to $1400 with shipping etc.

It should be just like getting a new one and programming it. As far as comfort access that will be part of programming and coding too . I'll find the link for you though.

Just noticed he's in Australia. Shipping would be a bitch. I think i'm going to go new to be safe despite the big $$ difference. Too many unknowns and really in a pinch to get back on the road.

thanks again for the heads up and help!

I looked up the shipping rate from 10 carriers for a 10lb package. From 93$ to 124$. That is crazy.

I have never flashed a NEW MSD81 with WinKFP. When I replaced mine, I had friend who works at a local Indy shop bring Autologic over to the house to do the flash. Guess I didn't trust WinKFP to marry it to the CAS. BTW, you can twist the arm off your local BMW parts department. Employee cost on a new MSD81 is $1005 less tax. They are still making money off it so you shouldn't get much push back telling them you want it at employee price. It saves you money and puts $ on the books. If you can't and you need one, hit me up... For $1250 I'll ship them all day.

Thanks for the reply. I ordered one from Tisch yesterday. Too late to turn back now.

If you had to do it now would you try winkpf or just get it done at a shop? I really don't want to F around. This is a huge bummer after replacing my frigging engine a few months ago.

Lastly...will I need new MHD maps now? I have a PTF tune. Old dme is Msd80...does that matter?? Will I get a new stock map vs thr old I8aos?

I personally would take it to a shop with AutoLogic and have them do the flash.

It will have your VIN and the correct IJE0S assembly for your car. More than likely you'll need to send your AP to COBB to have it unmarried. Then hit PTF up for a new tune on IJE0S. You could also go MHD. But you'll still need to have your AP fixed so you can sell it.

Good luck.

When this happened to my car, I had to send back my Cobb and have them reset it. It took about a week or so. I also tried fixing it myself and f'ed it up even more, so you're not the only one. I ended up just letting the dealer replace the dme and all injectors, could, and plugs. Got hosed but wanted the piece of mind and work was crazy at the time so I couldn't focus on working on a car and needed it for work. At least you'll get a loaner lol.

Thanks but I already have a new one arriving Friday. Bummer I didn't look this route but more peace of mind this way I guess.

I do have a Cobb that was locked when I replaced my engine. Will definitely send it back to have it cleared. I do have mhd and my PTF tune was converted to MHD by Dzenno.

Just talked to the shop I had my engine swap done at and they want $180 to program it. That seems a little high to me...!?
