Looking to upgrade my stock radio. Is this a good replacement?
Hi everyone,
I currently drive a '12 328ix. I would like to install a new (single din)headunit that has built-in GPS as well as a flip up screen w/ the option to install a rear camera. I am absolutely clueless about what to look for and I can really use your help. Would this unit be a good replacement? http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00WXO1OV0 As far as my car is concerned I don't believe I have the upgraded audio. Will I still need an amp? Thanks for your feedback!

general consensus is this is the best unit if you must replace the head unit.

Be aware of the side effects.
Be aware of the side effects.
Which can include BMW will not be able to run diagnostics or update the software in your car without the original head unit installed or parallel mounted. Things like the SOS or PDC will cease to function and cause a permanent error code to be displayed. There are work arounds but they require extra effort and if you ignore them it can bite you. head unit http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ight=head+unit http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1036190 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...hlight=dynavin http://www.janus-design.net/english/ http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=355089 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ight=head+unit http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...hlight=dynavin http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...hlight=dynavin http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...light=retrofit http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=993447 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1016187 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...hlight=dynavin You can't just throw a head unit into these new computer based cars and expect a good result . Also you need to be aware of which sound system you are starting out with . Read the audio build sticky first and find out if you have Hi Fi , L7 or base stereo sound system. If you have the L7 basicly the only aftermarket head unit that will work with that is the N6 because they are the only one that makes and adapter that works with the Fiber optic connection between the amp and head unit. You can put an aftermarket HU (I have a pioneer double din), but as eluded to, you'll want to retain your stock HU and relocate it to your trunk or something. It's needed for dealer software updates and various chimes/PDC if your car is equipped with it.
It would help a lot to know what system you're starting with, to answer questions about whether you need to upgrade /add an amp etc
