BMWhat and SES code blocking function
I have been speaking with Parvis at BMWhat (the iPhone app) about adding a function to block certain SES codes from recurring. He seems to be open to the idea, but I'm not technical enough to continue the discussion on my own. I told him there would be many members of the BMW community, particularly the diesel community, who would be interested in this function.
Can anyone help me keep the conversation going? Here is his latest response which I can not answer: You are talking DME reset? So far you are the first one asking for that… Can there go anything wrong or can there anything negatively happen with a DME reset? Like the car does not drive like before anymore?

I'm not sure how the app would accomplish this. (I own the app)
The app simply reads and can clear the codes that appear in the DDE. To accomplish what you are speaking about requires altering the computer code in the car's DDE (editing and rewriting pieces of programming code in our encrypted DDE) to no longer look for faults on the EGR system and hence no longer trigger the SES light. BMWhat app can't do this, this is tuner territory as it requires a special bench flash to the DDE. The only other possibility is for those that have BMWhat running 100% of the time they drive the car, perhaps Parvis could setup an if then function such that if the EGR shadow codes show up, then clear them immediately before they manifest into an SES code. Catch is, for this to work, you will always need to have BMWhat on and connected every time you drive. |

So the Android Torque app has the ability to set a function where it automatically checks for codes and will attempt to clear fault codes. If this is what you mean, then this could be useful for people who don't want to look at the SES light for known issues (like the EGR delete).
The problem with Torque(at least when I've tried it) and our car is it won't clear the code in this way. I have to have the car off, ignition on, send the clear code command, then power off the car, then the fault gets cleared. With the Bav Tech tool, it'll clear the code even when the car is running. Haven't tried this with the BMWhat app. If BMWhat could do like Torque does (auto check and clear codes) and be able to do it on the fly while the car is running (like the Bav Tech tool can), then this could be a useful feature. |

In Torque you can go to Settings->Speech/Alarm settings->Periodically scan for faults (enable this) and Automatically clear faults (enable this) - then it's fully automated. But for my car, this doesn't actually reset the code. With Torque I seem to need to be ignition on, send clear command, then ignition off, for it to work.
