More intrepid soles than you think. Mine, Yozh, TDI, NC, and others. Whoever mentioned using it as an extra fuel tank, safety wise I would tread cautiously.
Other thing about the close out. Yes, TDI did put a panel under there. I installed the compact spare under there. My point is I don't see a bad loss mpg wise at least at lower speeds (65-70 mph) but he may be right about turbulence under there at higher speeds. I wanted easy access to the tire. It's about time to take it down and check its air pressure.

it does seem a little silly to keep a non-functional piece of equipment on the car, but the air flow and whatnot considerations is pretty valid.

any thoughts on the weight distribution issue with the loss of fluid in the rear, the heavy DPF, etc etc? or not enough of a difference to make a difference?

probably more of an issue for those who do straight pipe back and remove everything. maybe another good reason to go "sleeper" and keep everything where it is and just modify and code...

In some states the annual inspection include OBD reading + visual inspection of car overall including emission equipment.
They do not know much so they look for catalytic converter to be in place.

In NJ, where i lived before, on state stations they had cameras mounted in the floor to film the car, and i have seen how they stop right where catalytic was.

what in the system can you gut? the DPF and the muffler. that's it, right? i guess the SCR too.. that's the cat, right? so you'd take the whole system down.. cut holes on the top and empty it out?

doesn't the DP replace the DPF? i wish there was a good diagram of this. i don't think i've seen the bottom of my car without all the panels yet..

If you are not likely to go back to the stock set-up and would like to use the OEM pipe while doing the alphabet deletes and a tune, you can do the following:

-gut the DPF, but not the DOC (converts your CO to CO2 and reduced the organic diesel smell by up to 90% at higher exhaust temps);
-remove the urea mixer;
-gut the SCR;
-chop off the mufflers (drops good 40-50lbs), replace with 60mm pipes (mufflers are straight through anyway, so it's the weight saving you are after).

Or keep the stock stuff and do one of the options for the mandrel bent exhaust with the downpipe from Bohl.
