Jb4 in a moderatley high milege 335i X-Drive

So while my 335i Xdrive is still in the shop i was contemplating getting a JB4 put in. All my research came up positive until a few days ago when the mechanic who has my car told me his buddy just blew up his engine with a chip so it scared me a little. No idea what chip/ piggyback tune he used or how he managed to blow up his N54. So I'm wondering, how safe is it to run a JB4 on a 2010 335i Xdrive (sports seats but no oil cooler, which is weird) with 140000 Kms ( roughly 87000 miles ) and has anyone ever blew their engine with a JB4? Also, i plan on installing the DCI and 30% E85 if i get the JB4. This car will be more of a daily with the occasional short day at the track (oil cooler might be a wise investment).

Thanks in advance!

My 07 335i currently has over 120,000 miles and has been tuned for over 40,000 miles at 430whp by wedge performance, and is still running great (knock on wood). A good tune and and preventative maintenance goes a long way.

Have you ever had to replace fuel pumps or turbos?

I have not owned the car very long, the previous owner did most of the modifications (downpipes, LSD, upgraded intercooler, charge pipe, procede rev3, open flash tablet, wedge tune, vishnu flex fuel kit) and did a lot of maintenance before I bought it. He replaced the fuel pump, water pump, injectors, plugs, coils, and both turbos under warranty at 80,000 miles. This made buying a 335i with high mileage much easier for me because he had maintenance records and many of the common failure components were replaced already, hopefully I will be trouble free for a while.
Pushing your car harder then the manufacture expected will always wear things out faster, that simple, but if done correctly they can last a long time.

Our car was tuned for its entire life and had 160,000 on the clock when the new F80 came along to replace it, and we did a lot of the early JB testing (Remember the JB1 and JB2) so the car was abused to say the least. Turbos were done under recall (2007) due to waste gate rattle early on and we had no problems with the car other then the usual, water pump, fuel pump issues.

Thanks Mike for chiming in, I have a few more noob questions. Will E85 help me keep cool with the lack of an oil cooler? or should I look into retrofitting a stock cooler into my engine? Also is it worth it to change all coils before tuning or am I good to just change the plugs?

Had JB4 on my car till 106K miles.
Now have a Wedge tune currently sitting at 113K. The engines are quite tough, its the other stuff that usually goes wrong like- Water pump, DME (early models), coils/plugs, HPFP. Nothing thats particularly tune related. If maintained well these things are as good as any. Fundguy1 has one thats pushing over 600whp now with over 226K miles. I havent had anyone get in my car and guess its got 113K miles on it.
Point being i maintained well, no reason your car wont see another 100K. That said logging is key. Usually give you an indication if something is off, so you can get to it before it becomes a major issue.

Oil Cooler would be good, was the very first thing I added. Especially since mine is DD and ave to sit in traffic for long periods, and at times the oil temps got quite alarmingly hot.

RE what your mechanic told you- Well who knows what the other person was doing. Maybe he wasnt paying attention to obvious signs, or could be just a freak. Its pretty hard to find any blown engines on this platform, the ones I've read about had been running meth, and somehow the mixture wasnt quite right when it happened. Or somebody money shifted, and that will screw any engine. Again, if one keeps an eye on it and you dont go right to the raggedy edge you will be fine.
