I had 3 S2000s and they were really fun cars, the last one being a CR. I cant believe I sold it 4 or 5 years ago for 27k with under 30k miles. Would probably fetch another 10k today

Why doesn't Honda bring back the S2K again? Because they have a Type R now?

The S2000 never really made the company much money. Specialized sports cars are not profitable for the company... a one off RWD chassis with an engine that is made specifically for the car - it costs a lot of R&D to do that. They'd rather sell mass market Civics and CRVs.

In the 90s and early 2000s, Japan was at the top of its game. Their economy was going nuts and demand for Japanese cars was high domestically and internationally. They pumped a ton of money building crazy cars that showcased their technology. They probably lost money on every single Supra/NSX/3000GT/RX7 they sold but they didn't care. Today, Japan has been in a recession for 20 years. Domestic (Japanese) market demand for new cars is non existant. The overall demand for sports cars has been greatly reduced and all the companies just want to make profit, not take losses on halo cars. I went to Super Autobacs a few months ago in Tokyo. They have a used car lot that sell some lightly modded clean cars... this time the whole lot was covered with BMWs and Mercedes. The JDM market is dead even in Japan.
