Do I need a Protune??

Ok, I've noticed that when I run my AP3 on Stg 2 Aggressive that I have hesitation and backfire (multiples), but when I remove the tune I don't.

At first I thought I had a HPFP issue but it turns out that I'm not getting the same issues per the message above.

Then I thought it may be the coils, plugs or something else but again, the issue as discussed above negates that.

Could I be either running too lean or not enough air??

Sorry I'm still new to all of this and need the advice of the experts here.

Thanks in advance.

93? And yes get a protune! I'd recommend pro tuning freaks. My car hauls and is smoother after it. I'd say get a 93 tune and e30 tune if you have access to ethanol. Total should be $350.

If you're going back to the stock map and it runs okay, it could be your plugs. Also the maps that come on the Cobb are generic for all cars. They are okay, but that's a one size fits all approach and doesn't work well. But that's what they have to do given the simplicity of the Cobb. Add these parts and flash with this map -done.

Thanks for the advice, right now I have new plugs and that was something I was going to try first to see if it fixes the problem but even if I get the Protune without the plugs (which may or may not be the actual problem) it would still do the same (backfiring), right??

What gas are you running? 91? 93? Aggressive requires 93.

Some have had issues with the builtin maps. The only way to tell the issue is to take logs and review them. No codes right? Pro tuning freaks will review the logs you send them so if something isn't right after a few revisions to your maps then you know it's a hardware issue.

+1 for Pro Tuning Freaks. Regardless of mods your going to enjoy the tune much more than the OTS Maps. It's recommend to change plugs when you get a tune anyway so I'd start there. Hopefully that's solves the issue. If not I'm sure the logs will provide the ProTuning guys some insight on what's going on.

I always run 93 and I mix about 9 to 4 gals of Meth/unleaded. No codes other than the one for the Catless DPs, I'm getting my DP fix installed this coming weekend to take care of that.

The aggressive map is only for 93. Nothing else. Do you mean you put 9 gallons of e85 in the tank and 4 gallons of 93? If so that's way too much ethanol and that's your problem. You can only run ethanol on a map specifically designed for it.

That much ethanol would definitely need an upgrade LPFP and protune.

Can N55 get a custom tune with a JB4 or do we need Cobb?

Don't mean to hijack the thread but.....

How do you like the Fuel it Stage 2? Is it worth it? How tough was the install?

I am currently running a tune from PTF with 8 gallons of 93 pump and 8 gallons of E85 on a stock fuel pump. The gains are fantastic, but I'm not sure its worth the extra push with the fuel it upgrade on a stock turbo.

No, the other way around.

I would suggest only running 93. It should run fine like that. Then get a protune map to run e30.

The Cobb canned maps for the N55's are terrible. Tons of throttle closures, Far too rich AFR's, and not enough timing. Stage 1 aggressive FMIC hardly makes 285-290whp, and you hardly will get a full pull without some hesitation/throttle closure above 5K RPM.

Since you already have the Cobb AP3 I would definitely highly recommend a protune from PTF or similar service provider. Your car will run better and much faster, and you will enjoy driving it more! There is some time and effort involved in the tuning process but it is well worth it IMO. Check out the tuning instructions on PTF's website and make sure you're up for the task. Lots of bang for the buck, especially since you already have the Cobb AP.

Exactly! The Cobb OTS maps for the N55 are mediocre at best. Get a Protune. I also recommend getting the GFB DV+ as it will help hold boost.

I already have the GFB DV, it's listed in my Sig as one of my mods.

If you have a JB4 then just run map 5. No need for a custom tune. You can also run map 6 which can be customized using the JB4 software. Additionally, you can run a JB4 stacked with a custom Cobb tune but I'm not sure there is much benefit to doing that.
