Picked up a set of wheels last night that have got a LOT of baked on brake dust on them. I'll be having a go at giving them a good clean this weekend.

Does anyone know of any solutions for getting rid of it, without having to resort to things like IronX or these other fancy wheel cleaners?

Why don't you want to use a wheel cleaner?

Quite a few people use oven cleaner but I would be weary if there is any damage to the paint.

Don't understand this thread if you want to clean them properly with no risk of damage to the surface get a dedicated wheel cleaner I like the valet pro dragons breath can be got for a reasonable price and does a very good job. But if really bad and lots of thick grime iron X is the only thing to use to pull the crap out the finish. Depends if you want them to look clean or actually be clean and looking like new?

I like Bilt Hamber Auto Wheels. £12/13 for 1L so it goes pretty far. Also, Bilberry wheel cleaner. £7/8 for 1L and can be diluted.

Wheel cleaner may not cut it and you could be looking at the likes of Tardis or Fall out remover

More than anything, I was thinking of something that I can get hold of before the weekend, without having to pay through the nose for delivery on. I've used the Gtecniq wheel cleaner before and TBH, it wasn't very good and cost a fortune.

Tardis won't work for baked on brake dust. If it's really bad, you might have to hit it with Wonder Wheels.

You can pick up something like Wonder Wheels in Halfords.

Iron X may not actually get all that yellowing out, but its a good starting point.

You may need to resort to a dedicated wheel cleaner, possibly sonax, or maybe a big more aggressive acidic cleaner.

Wonder wheels it and can be bought from Halfords. Should do the trick as it's very strong and will strip wheel sealant etc off as it's acidic based.

Blit Hamber is pretty decent and can be had for a good price.

Also if they aren't on the car you can probably soak them in some domestic cleaners first for next to no cost, or use the pressure washer? You can usually get most of it off and then save the expensive cleaners for getting the hardest bits off.

Pretty sure you can get wonder wheels in asda for a fiver too.

Ok so picked up some autoglym wheel cleaner (the acidic one). It took 90% of the crap off, but I'm left with the iron-y bits of brake dust now. Will have to pick up some AD or that dragon's breath stuff to get the rest off. Then an alloy wheel repair kit.
