Switching Seat Belt Color

Hey E90 Post,

I am looking to switch out my boring black seat belts for red ones. I noticed IND has them for an exorbitant amount of money. So, no.

But, I did see someone with an M3 had theirs changed to red by just purchasing the belt fabric (http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=979401). However, it stops at the important part which is unraveling the seat belt.

Does anyone have any experience with any of this? I would need a shop to basically sew the belt the right way, and then I would have to unravel the old belt and "ravel" in the new one. I can secure the fabric for $20. But, I have no idea where I could get it sewn up.

Any thoughts?

I spoke with a shop owner around my area, and he pointed me in the direction of an upholstery guy. The owner brought up an interesting point: some people may not want to sew or work on the seatbelts for liability in the event of an accident. Certainly some food for thought.

DO NOT DO THIS!

As a former engineer and current program manager for an automotive seat belt supplier I can tell you this is nowhere near a simple matter. Beyond the fact that you have to unspool the retractor and have special tools and clips even to remove the webbing beyond the massively horrid safety implications... Believe me, spend your money elsewhere.

OK cool, thanks for your input. Will not do then, just something floating around as an idea w/o research on it
