n55 vs n54 tuning

it seems that the 07 335 and 2013 335 have the same HP and Torques.
So im guessing they will have similar 0-60 times.
my question is that after tuning which car would be able to deliver more power?

Easily N54, the newer N55 isn't as responsive as the N54 when it comes to mods.

N55s don’t flow as well up top, and the market for upgraded turbo solutions is nowhere near where the N54 is (for that matter tuning in general for the N55 is nowhere near where the N54 is). So if absolute power numbers are your goal, IMO the N54 responds better to modding, and has a larger universe of products you can purchase. With that being said, the N55 is the more modern and efficient motor, and at least anecdotal evidence seems to support the claim that it is more reliable.

N54 is the more powerful engine when tuned. (stock turbos and FOB)

I'm a BMW service advisor. The N55 is a Toyota Corolla compared to the N54. Plus the N55 gets (from my experience with both) 1-3mpg better gas mileage.

I'm excited to see what Vargas Turbo and Rob Beck bring to the table for the N55 in the upcoming year. Technically speaking, the N55 *should* outflow an N54 with all else being equal since the valves are larger and the cam duration is longer. I guess we'll see.

BMW has put all their eggs in the N55 basket. In just 2 years the N55 is in more vehicles than the entire life of the N54, and the new M3/4 will have an upgraded version of the N55..

In regards to us E9x N55 owners, the exhaust manfiold/turbo assembly is the exact same part number for E9x and for F3x chassis, so outside of tuning, there will be a HUGE market for the N55 when the F30 335i's are sold.

(plus it sounds better with full exhaust )

I don't do too badly with a DINAN stage III, free flow exhaust, FMIC, oil cooler, and Alpina TCU flash. I know the N54 is a hell of a tuning platform, but I am plenty happy!

The N55 turbo/manifold combo assembly is the same part number between E9x and F3x

Good enough for me!
No doubt that setup is quite powerful and more than enough for almost all drivers. I'm not saying the N55 is a poor engine or doesn't make good power, to the contrary it is superior to the N54 in several respects. But if absolute power figures are your goal, N54 is the superior motor. The twin scroll runs out of breath quickly.

IIRC things weren’t looking too good for upgraded turbos on the N55, RB stripped one down and ran into several issues. I don’t doubt they can be circumvented/defeated, but the initial cost to get around them was likely too great to take the plunge. I’m also of the belief that BMW overbuilt the N54 to a degree that was not profit maximizing for a stock motor, it was their first FI motor in quite some time I think. That’s great news for those of us who like to power mod, but for 99% of the market it’s useless and costly. The N55 from what I can tell is simpler and more efficient, but this could come at the cost of making big power on the stock bottom end down the road. N54s appear to be holding up well in the 5-600whp range, it remains to be seen if the N55 can do the same. Either way, this should be a good year for the N55, and I absolutely agree that BMW has really put this motor at the forefront of its lineup. It’s a very versatile motor, no doubt.

N54 on stock turbo's has more capability. There is also a lot more aftermarket parts available currently. There is also a lot more turbo upgrades available.

If you are still itching for an N54 new, you need to get the 335is. It's the only 3 Series that still offers the N54.

Well they don't have the same motor, if i'm reading your comment correctly. But between the two, stock? Sure more or less. But we’re talking about the power potential with these motors, and in that scenario the N54 is simply stronger. If you plan on leaving the motor stock I’d 100% prefer the N55. Fewer issues, simpler to fix, more efficient…

lol i have over 30 more whp than you and half the mods, explain how n55 is better? It just doesn't have the same modding potential. Its more reliable but thats about it. The N54 also won engine of the year 5 times in a row. The n55 has yet to receive one. The performance version of the the 335(335IS) also uses the n54 for a reason.
