Buying my car - how did you pay?

A few weeks early, but I want to make sure I've got everything lined up for 1st March.

How did you pay for your BMW (I'm buying it outright, not on finance)? I've an online bank account, so I can't walk into a branch and get a bankers draft or building society cheque, which I assume would be preferred.

I bought my current car on my debit card .. this okay for BMW too?

When I went in to pick mine up the finance guy came rushing over with the card machine (though I had a BS cheque for him) so I don't see why not.

Cool, thanks. I'll check with the dealer, naturally - just wanted to make sure there wasn't anything I needed to set in motion (like opening a new bank account that I *can* get a building society cheque from!)

Most delaers includuing BMW will charge + 2% for credit card, mine asked for a draft, I have paid via switch before, but pre warned the bank beforehand.

If you're paying by card make sure you know your account passwords etc. As they normally bounce payments of that size and ask you to follow up with a phone call. When this happened to me, I couldn't remember my account password or any recent transactions. It took quite a while for them to verify my identity and authorise the payment.

Definitely, get pre-approval from your debit card provider beforehand else they will bounce it.

I paid by debit card, and messaged my bank beforehand to tell them to expect the large transaction. Went through fine.

Oddly I paid for my current car on my debit card and it went through without calling anyone, but it is certainly good advice (have to check if my bank is even open on a Saturday). It was the first time the guy at the dealership had ever seen go straight through. I kept the printout, not often you get a £29k credit card receipt

mine were great, put the whole lot on the visa for me and then let me leave it on there for a month before refunding me to avoid the 2% and then I paid on Debit.

Saved me quite a lot of dough !

I just gave my dealer a normal cheque. As a dealer once said to me when I gave him a large cheque and he accepted it, I joked about the risk and he said that it was the £100 cheque that bounced not one for Thousands!

If my bank let through that amount on the debit card w/o question I would be seriously pissed off!

park lane dealer would only allow 1,000 on the credit card, the rest was done using using switch/meastro.

Went through with no problems, though I did inform the bank I would have a large withdrawl for a car.

Paid for the 335 with debit card but did ring the bank first to pre warn them and it went straight through. Previous e46 was also bought with the debit card but didn't pre warn the bank so there were phone calls and additional security checks. Paid for the 120 with a BACS transfer.

Regards

Chris

Sytner told me a limit of £3000 is placed on credit cards but you can pay upto that level without additional fees. Like a few others, I paid the full £40k by bank transfer, purely because i dont carry around bank cards these days. To ensure everything runs smoothly, i would get pre-approval for using a debit card.
