I've searched these forums, but can't find what I thought was going to be a simple answer. Apologies if this is a repeat.

What is the normal operating range of the water temperature for an N55?

I got a bluetooth OBD2 scanner for a different reason, but it tells me at 217° I should take it in for repair. Pretty sure that's incorrect.

My water temp fluctuates between 215°F-230°F.

Oil temp stays steady and below 250°F. I've read the posts about it running hotter for efficiency and limp mode if it gets too hot.

Is there an official "normal" range?

You've googled "bmw characteristic map thermostat n55", right?

217 was the limit for M54 on E46 cars, IIRC.

I hadn't googled "bmw characteristic map thermostat n55" because I didn't know that was a thing.

I appreciate the info. All is operating fine so I wasn't too worried. Seems like an overly difficult bit of information to obtain.

I can see why the gauge was removed from the dashboard.

Glad to be of help. The addition of limp mode when overheating has saved many engines. The temp guage on the E46 was of no use: when the needle moved from "ok" in the center to "hot" at the right it was pretty much too late.
