V2 PROcede vs Audi R8
Well, I can say from first hand experience now that a (my) v2 PROcede 335i with 6AT and K&N drop in filter on 91 Octane can take an Audi R8, especially once we hit 2nd and 3rd gears.
To the guy in Valencia with the black Audi R8 I spoke to and had some fun with....well nice talking to you! Thanks, I never expected to have the chance to play with an Audi R8. As I told you then, that car looks fantastic on the road. And the sound it makes at full steam ahead was just awesome too. And no, my BMW with CSL reps is not the new M3, but the 335i. Look up Vishnu PROcede if you were wondering how I was able to pull away from you in a 335i in both of our runs. I wasn't able to get my phone out in time to record it, sorry. Maybe next time I see him. Last edited by Driver72; 01-26-2008 at 05:20 PM.. |

Car and Driver (re: Audi R8):
"yielding consistent 0-to-60 runs in the low-four-second range—4.3 in this test—with the quarter-mile flashing by in 12.8 seconds at 112 mph. Again, that’s a bit slower than our April performance but within Audi’s official performance forecasts. And the sounds that go with the R8 soaring toward peak revs are tough to beat for sheer internal-combustion audio." Car and Driver got 12.6 @ 113 in their April test R8 with the R-Tronic (read: DSG) transmission in that one. The test that got 12.8 @ 112 was in a 6 speed manual. I'm guessing the guy I ran had the 6 manual instead of the DSG. I think he would of been right along side me if he had the DSG. |

Wait, you beat the R8 or kept up with it? Either way, that's pretty awesome for a car less than half the price.

The R8 driver could say "yea, I lost. But I am still in an R8, not a lowly 3-Series". This is a comparison to the Probe GT where the less expensive car won but others said, "I'd rather be in the BMW". And just having fun on a Saturday evening... Last edited by scalbert; 01-26-2008 at 08:46 PM.. |

First time after talking with him we didn't discuss running but I thought he might try. So I was in M1 and DTC button pushed. The light went green I started to accelerate out and he jumped on it right away, (so I proceed to nail it too) he jumped 3/4 car on me so his rear end of his car was at my car's front wheel. I had my passenger window down so I could hear his car and lovely exhaust screaming easily. We both hit 2nd and I start creeping up on him and pull ahead by a bit, hit third and I pull a bit more. We then had to shut it down at about 85 I was about 1/2 CL ahead. So I went from 3/4 CL back to 1/2 CL in front in 0-85 run. Next run, he pulled in behind me and there was about 15 feet of dead space between my rear bumper and his front. I knew I had to nail this launch otherwise he'd go right up into my rear. I brake torqued to about 1300 rpms, on the green, I launch great with a bit of chirp, chirp, chirp on my tires as I pull out. Go through 1st and hit 2nd and glance at my rear window, he's pretty close to my rear, (still about the same 15-20 feet of air between bumpers. In 2nd the gap widens by a bit, hit third, staying on the gas this time, the gap is slowly getting wider. Shut it down at top of third this time and he was probably 4+ CL's back. Since he started about 2 CL's back, I'd say I pulled 2 CL's on him. 1 in 2nd and another in 3rd. When I shut it down at top of third he was still on the gas a bit longer because he zoomed up alongside shortly thereafter and stuck his arm out the window and gave me a big wave. I waved back, then he nailed it again and took off. I'm guessing he (like most R8 owners) didn't launch the car with all it had, but he surely launched as hard as any owner would since he stuck on my arse in 1st and I'm guessing my car is capable of <4.5 seconds to 60 and I launched it pretty darn perfectly, so I know he launched hard. Put it this way, he launched harder than a guy in an STI i ran with where I put more distance on him in 1st than I did to this R8. He might not have been the best at shifting either, but on the first run when I was passing, his car was screaming and I heard him shift pretty quickly. The R8 sounded so great, I couldn't even hear my car as I was creeping by him. We are at 1400 feet in elevation too, though not much that benefits me more than his NA car. Thanks Scalbert for the clarification on the transmissions. |

On a serious note, I drove the R8 on the track. No DSG. It is called R-Tronic and it's NOT a dual clutch.

R-tronic is definitely a single-clutch system and doesn't feels as seamless as the dual clutch S-tronic. My Audi dealer told me that the S-Tronic was not yet able to handle the high revs from that screaming V8.

I tailed one of those in Europe. Sheer beauty!
On my ED, I tailed one in Italy with my 335. I'd take it any day over my 335 even if it was a 6 seconds car. Life is a lot more than a 0-60 statistic. The R8 is just so much more! Damn is it a beauty!!

The R8 was tested on Motor Week yesterday on TV. I don't know if it was a new test or a repeat. They got a 4.5 0-60 in the auto test car. They concluded that the transmission needed some work on a few "minor inconsistencies". Get the manual for now was their conclusion. Rated the car as excellent for the money. It was white with a silver blade and red leather.

My torque settings are a bit "custom" I don't have the same value going across the board. I have it starting around 91% at 1000 rpm and ramping up to 94% at 4500 rpm than dropping back down to 93% at 6500 rpms and 92.5xx% at 7000 rpm. On numerous datalogs I see a peak of 14.3 and occasionally 14.4 psi but most of the time it's in the high 13's to low 14's for the most part in the meat of the power band, then dropping of course as it gets closer to redline. I'm on 91 Octane and no issues whatsoever, and a nice smooth power increase with no big torque hits up top. With my settings peaking at 93.3xxx (boost peaking at 14 psi) I dynoed at 345 rwhp 352 rwtq I'd suspect now I'm at 350 rwhp / 360 rwtq I agree guys, I'd rather have the R8 too, even though I beat him. It's not just about straight ahead speed. It is a sweet looking car, sweet sounding car, and is plenty fast enough. But I gotta say for less than 1/2 the amount of money as the R8, the 335i Coupe is the best looking, fastest car you can get for the money. E90ice, nice! |
