E90 LCI: Compass, Garage Door Opener, Auto Dimmer not working!
So after owning this car for about a week. I've noticed that the rear view mirror's features are not working. The LED in the clown nose blinks when the car is locked (alarm activated), but everything else isn't working.
I did some quick searching online, and a few people recommended to check fuse #28. However, that seems to be for older E90s. This is a LCI (2011 335i) and that fuse appear to be for something else. I checked it anyway, and it was fine. I'm having a hard time identifying which fuses I need to check, I've attached a scan of my diagram. I checked fuses 07, 63, 09, 66, and 74. All were fine. I also stuck a pin into the mirror compass reset button, nothing. The garage door opener led does not blink when I push any of the bottoms, and lastly the auto-dim does not seem to work at all (I'll double check once it gets dark out). I actually have a FLA mirror that I'm planning to retrofit soon. I tested that mirror as well, but like the original mirror nothing works except the clown nose blink. Any help with this is greatly appreciated. Last edited by TomTomTuning; 08-02-2016 at 07:45 PM.. |

I found a diagram for a E63 that has descriptions for each fuse in addition to the symbol. Number 54,62 is for Alarm Siren/Auto Dim Rear View Mirror.... However, both fuses were fine in my car.
Still no luck with this. BMW E63 Fuse Diagram: Last edited by TomTomTuning; 08-02-2016 at 09:49 PM.. |

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I'm willing to try anything.
I have a K+DCAN cable. Although I'm not super experienced with coding, I can certainly give it a try. Otherwise, I'll likely take it to an indy BMW shop next week. Hopefully they can figure it out. |

Does your roof center panel (FZD) Functioning Correctly? Pop it out and physically check the wiring and such. The Mirror gets its power and communication from that module. Yes, def connect INPA and try diagnose it.

I contacted a friend of a friend who works at an Indy BMW shop. He told me which fuses to check, which were all fine. Then he told me to check for power and ground on pins 8 and 10 of the mirror connector. Both pins were functionally perfectly. I'm going to take it to his shop this week and have him one some further diagnostics. I'm not super familiar with INPA, so I'll let him run the test. I'll report back with my findings as things process. |

You're absolutely right. It was a lot easier than expected. However, since I've had the mirror disconnected and I was checking voltages on the pins. I decided it would be best if I cleared the codes and waited to see if any errors reappeared. That may have been dumb, since I didn't note which ones were originally present, but hopefully they come back. I drove around for 10 minutes and only one error appeared, but not for FZD.... I'll go for a longer drive soon, then again at night. Then I'll read the errors again.
Should I be doing anything else in INPA, besides reading the errors? Last edited by TomTomTuning; 08-04-2016 at 04:59 PM.. |

I got the car back form the indy BMW shop. They went over fuses, wiring, checked pin outs, voltage, checked modules, checked codes, etc. They could not find any thing wrong. He suspects that the mirror itself may be at blame.

I ordered a new mirror from eBay. The exact one my car came with. It has EC/LED/GTO/Compass.
Part Number: 51169192335 I noticed some have red clown nose and others are transparent grayish color, even with the same part number. I found one similar to mine with the grayish color LED cap, so I bought that one. I believe the grey nose is newer than the red ones? I could be wrong... Hopefully this solves my issue. |

My new mirror arrived today. It's 100% identical to my original mirror. Sadly it did not resolve my issue. I'm not sure if it's the FZD module, but thats really the last thing left.
I'm considering taking the car to the dealer and see what they say... But I was hoping to avoid that. |

New FZD module has been ordered. Fingers crossed this solved my problem.
A trick to finding things on eBay. RealOEM list the part number as 61319225539, but nothing came up when I searched eBay. I noticed that the part number on the FZD modules is missing the first 4 digits. So I searched for 9225539 instead and voila, several appeared. I REALLY hope this fixes my issue. Anyway, too be continued. Last edited by TomTomTuning; 08-15-2016 at 03:29 PM.. |
