My X5 with 175k does not smoke at all, ever. My 335d will smoke on start up but only after spirited driving. I believe it's because of blow-by making its way into the intake under spirited driving, dripping into the intake port etc. I do not have a catch can. It'd be interesting to see if guys with catch cans are experiencing smoke on start up.

(I have Jarek's 2.25 custom tune (he didnt give me 2.5 his concern was higher EGTs for X5 could affect reliability IDK..) - Also the car loved Liqui Moly 5w-30 but I put in bmw dealer oil this time.. it amazing how diesel engine reacts so much differently to various oils..

Why would you vent to atmosphere? Vacuum on the crank case is good and needed, and could be why you have blue smoke. Crank case vacuum assists in ring seal and absolutely no reason to sent to atmosphere. Last edited by 335dsleeper; 10-24-2016 at 03:26 AM.. |

Maybe so, however venting to atmosphere prevents nasty oily blow by being ingested back into intake tract.
I also enjoy watching the stream of blowby emitted on a cold windless mornings. The car emitted the bluish smoke at startup long before the blowby was routed away from intake tract. Leaky injectors could also cause this. |

I agree, you need that vaccum .. I'd do a catch can instead
