N54 Engine Replacement
So we have a 2007 335i in for an engine replacement.
Cause: Smoking turbos burning lots of oil. Car was driven and after shutting it off indicated +1 Qt. No low oil light beforehand. Damage most likely occurred when there was low oil. Constant cylinder 3 misfires and low timing. Car was driven about a week and half after this incident. After a big misfire the car started smoking profusely and had to be towed to our shop. Compression test showed cylinder 3 with no compression. The replacement engine is from a 2010 135i We are also installing an 09+ 8-Bolt DMFW, 335is/550i Clutch, VRSF OEM Location Silicone Inlets, VRSF Charge Pipe, and brand new OEM Replacement Turbos. ECU Harness disconnected Engine Removed with Transmission. We used a Floor Jack to guide the transmission up and out of the Engine Bay. Transmission Bell Housing unbolted from engine Here is the original dual mass flywheel and the original clutch. 90k Miles on them. The clutch was slipping before the turbos started losing boost through the wastegates causing slow spool. |

Any reason you pulled the motor out the front vs. dropping it on the subframe?

Stupid question time; since you're doing a swap, I take it the A/C system will have to be evacuated/charged after installing the new motor. Given that you have to "open" the system, I'm assuming the condenser, drier, etc. are all refreshed as well?
Anything else you guys swap when a new motor goes in? |

Looks like it was heavily abused.

I agree. Just had my clutch replaced at about 100,000 miles while replacing the rear main and it looked like it could go for another 50,000 miles.
Good luck with the rest of the swap

I agree that this is an unfortunate decision. Although the engine failure wasnt expected after shortly swapping in new turbos.

Clutch has been slipping for some time now. Customer wanted to address his failing turbos prior to clutch replacement Looks like the previous owner probably abused the clutch. Current owner started having slipping issues after FBO installed |

Hi Chris,a quick question since it looks like you've done this before, lol. I'm in the process of removing a n54 from a awd 535 and this is going in place of a n52. Is there and difference in the awd engine compared to the rwd? I want to use my current trans, and noticing there isn't much difference between the two. My car is a 07 525 and the donor car is a 08, late 07. Ty

It is pretty straight forward. If you know how to remove and replace engines, you're more than capable. Coding isn't difficult. You'll only have to code the injectors |

Huh? Maybe I misunderstood, but I think he's replacing an N52 with an N54...I imagine that at least a few modules in the car will have to be recoded with the proper VO, no?

Ahh, I didn't realize the same person commented 3 times. Yes if N52 to N54, there will be a lot of coding involved.
