BMW factory in Germany Vs. BMW factory elsewhere in terms of quality.
I was wondering what everybody thought about the quality of the cars made not in germany compared to those that were made in germany,
specifically, Rosslyn,South Africa which provides the US with 3 series, the Magna Styer Graz plant , Austria which produces the X3, and finally Spartenburg, South Carolina, home of the X5 and Z4. I have a vehicle made in Rosslyn, at first i was a bit shocked and uneasy about buying a BMW produced not in Germany, but at 5100 miles, i have had very little problems with the car. |

Ey they should be pretty much the same. I am sure BMW sets procedures and standards that all factories follow all across the world. They have to, or else they will end up sacrificing their reputation.

My car is sitting somewhere in South Africa since the 24 for a West Coast ship. The standards have to be the same. They all have the same motor you can not tell the difference where the car was made. |

The Rosslyn plant has one of the highest quality ratings within the BMW manufacturing network and won the 2002 JD Power award.

It really doesn't matter where the car's final assembly place is. I'm sure BMW has standards for each plant regardless of location. Think of it this way, do you actually think ALL the components of your BMW comes from Germany? Just look at each part, your rims are from Italy, your headlights are from Austria, etc etc. Many of the components are from different countries through different subcontractors. I wouldn't be surprised at all if I find out the microchips from our cars are made in Taiwan or China!

I'm sure the quality is the same, but if it were my 50k, I would want a vehicle produced in Germany, unless the savings is passed on to me. Case-in-point.....Maximas used to be produced in Japan, with components mostly made in Japan. Now they are produced in Tennessee with lower cost labor relatively speaking, and components from Mexico and The Philippines. The price has gone nothing but up. Obviously savings were not passed onto the consumer. Now, if profits have not gone up, it doesn't take a CPA to surmise what's next.

Again, with statistics, it's important to understand the correlation. My understanding is SA produces 328's or 325's. To attribute reliability with S Africa over Munich or Regensberg may or may not be correct. My guess is the latter.

They have 5er being built in Kaliningrad, Russia with the first "X" in the VIN. They suppose to have better initial quality rating than the ones built in Germany. At least thats what i've been told by a BMW rep.
