BMW dealership scratched my paint

I had a cracked windshield replaced by BMW of Bel Air, and they scratched the paint on my hood to the primer. It's about 5-6 parallel scratches, maybe 2" long, with 1 longer scratch about 4" long, and 2 pinpoint marks on my fender just below the line where it meets the hood, very close to the scratches above it.

In your opinion, what should they do to fix this? Mind you, every time I take one of their loaner cars, we have to walk it and inspect it, sign off for it when I take it and return it. From this point forward, I'm going to do the same thing when I drop my car off for any work in the future, because this isn't the first mishap at this dealership, and I'm getting pretty annoyed by it.

Yes, they should.

They do it to you when you get a loaner, likewise they have a responsibility for a mishap.

FYI My Indy wouldn't think twice about doing that for me.

Should I expect them to respray the whole panel? I just don't think a scratch repair kit is going to fix it correctly. Is that unreasonable?

I don't think that respraying the panel is too much to ask. One of their employees damaged it, did not bring it to anyone's attention and you discovered it after the fact. The longer you wait, the more that they'll argue that they're not responsible.

Always do a walk around, when you pickup your car. I've had my rim curbed, bumper scratched...... They usually have someone on site to look at it and the dealership has a third party take care of it. Honestly since you drove off without inspecting your car, the dealership could say "too bad, not our problem."

I did do a walk-around when I was picking the car up, and I found a damaged rim and the scratch in my paint at that time. If I hadn't pointed it out right then and there I'm very sure they would have told me to pound sand. They have already agreed to fix it, but they haven't told me what they intend to do to repair it. I think they need to respray the whole panel, because I don't think they will be able to blend it in properly and a scratch repair is definitely not acceptable.

That's good you did the walk around there and then. I'd let them do what they were intending to do this first time around to fix it, and if you aren't satisfied simply tell them what they did was not acceptable and you will only be happy if they respray etc to your liking.

I would have took photos of the damage as well. I asked them to write out what was damaged and had the manager initial it. I don't trust dealerships at all. And definitely ask them to respray the whole panel.

You could always let them do whatever they think is going to fix it, if it doesn't look good have them re-do it. It would be there loss if it doesn't come out right.

There are actually a lot of good paint correction techniques as of lately, I have a few guys in the industry that I know that go dealer to dealer fixing scratches nobody would think is possible.

I'll also tell you this right now, getting a panel re-sprayed isn't that much better these days, 9/10 times it doesn't even match that well.

Had a similar experience. They made noticeable scratches on my paint and on my passenger mirror cover. I brought it up and they offered a free detail which at the point I said sure but never came back because I was so pissed.

I'm planing to just get a professional detail once the winter is over to correct the scratches, left bad reviews, and never ever coming back to this same dealer.

Just to close the loop on this, and for your general information, BMW Bel Air had a scheduled drop-off time for me a few days ago to fix this issue. I sent them an email before-hand with an estimate I got from a respected local body shop, and told them I needed the repair done well - basically just called them out a bit for all the various trouble I've been through with them, and within 10 minutes the service manager called me and proceeded to yell at me, disavow any responsibility for what they had done, and told me to never return to his dealership. I suppose I should've made them take pictures and sign something when we were all standing there and the SM admitted they were responsible. Clearly this is a guy - his name is Jim Gugliette - who has some pretty low ethical standards.

So, in all, I am left with the following damage to my car:
1) windows seals never replaced when they fixed some trim on warranty
2) torn tire sidewall likely improperly repaired (need to confirm)
3) M logo fallen off of refinished wheel
4) roughly $3k in repairs to fix my paint to its original condition

and, I've been banned from the only dealership within 30 miles or more of my house, so that's peachy.

I'd probably throw on my black leotard and head there at 2AM tonight and practice my karate with M4 mirrors.

Get the police of BBB involved. That's simply unacceptable, especially if you have it in writing that you had an appointment (which shows they once accepted responsibility).
