e9x PRE-LCI - Steering Wheel Questions
Hello,
I was curious about upgrading my steering wheel. I have a 2008 BMW 335xi PRE-LCI I have the base steering wheel which is a little bit of an eye sore but.. I was wanting to know what all to look for when getting a new steering wheel. I want paddle shifters and I am more than fine with coding them in. The main thing I want to know is what are the guide lines if I got a new steering wheel and I was looking to install paddles. Please let me know. Any/all suggestions and feedback is appreciated! Thanks, Derek |

If you have a non-sport wheel, you'll need the sport airbag along with the new wheel you buy. Can get pricey.

You also can't buy sport airbags yet if I recall. Until recall is over they're holding for replacement with new airbags. Not sure how you'd get the shrapnel bag recalled if you installed it yourself if you bought it used....

You then need to get the sport airbag Once you've done that, you'll need to get the Burger Motor Sports harness Then you'll need to get the specific sport Buttons with part number 61319123287. Sport wheel with paddles - $225.00 Sport Air bag - $300.00 BMS harness - $110.00 Sport Buttons - $215.00 You should be able to sell your airbag on eBay for $300.00. So, that part is a wash. Steering wheel might go for $100.00 max on eBay. You are probably looking at $450.00 when it's all said and done |

Demand for non-sport airbags is much lower than sport, I'm not sure you'll get $300 for it (but doesn't hurt to try). Also, do some research on shipping airbags before selling yours on eBay, you may find a local sale is preferred (I think airbags are classified as hazardous materials and need specific shipping requirements).

Also keep in mind the sport airbags have been recalled. You'll have to make sure the airbag you're buying is the new replacement part and not one of the old recalled parts.
It's probably a safe bet that all used airbags on the market now are going to be the recalled parts. You probably won't be able to buy a new updated airbag from the dealer since they are all reserved for recalls and they're still in short supply.
