White smoke
So I just purchased an 08 335i. It has a secondary cat delete. I am getting a more than normal amount of white smoke from the tail pipes. Leakdown and compression tests all came back fine.
Is this just a by product of not having the secondary cats? I have used the search function, unfortunately most results are how to delete them, not what the end result could be. If someone can clarify for me, that would be great. |

I had them checked as well. No leaks and no wastegate rattle. What else could be wrong with them?

I see quite a bit of white smoke especially at idle too but my trips are extremely short so I'm sure a lot of condensation builds up in the exhaust. Also the smoke just smells like steam. |

fuel injector leaking? yours may be covered. search for index 12 injectors - if yours are leaking, the engine is dumping more fuel than necessary = excess condensation when cold. mine had your symptoms until I swapped the faulty injectors.

putting your secondary cats back on will change nothing, dont even bother. white smoke is normal for our cars. make sure you always check and top up coolant/oil levels if necessary.

Going fully catless will only show existing problems more apparently. They will not in themselves cause smoke. I am fully catless from the turbo back to the tailpipe and I have zero smoke.
Smoke can be caused by cracked valve cover, leaky valve cover gasket, oil filter housing gasket, turbo seals, bad PCV, bad valve stem seals. I've been unlucky to have had every single one of those problems. |
