Correct. 09 and later have a weaker charge pipe. They need replacing if you start tuning.

They all have forged internals. I'd get the newest/best maintained one you can and focus more on the car you want rather than the year. 09+ certainly is nice, or if you like coupes a 335is is hard to beat.

All of the years are good in their own ways. If you take the DME out of the equation there is nothing more reliable about the 09+ cars. They seem to have less issues because they have less miles. Any 07-08 is bound to have a later fuel pump and injectors.
What is a DME? Why does getting a manual defeat the purpose of 335is?

It doesn't. A manual 335is will have all of the MTech cosmetic stuff, plus the black headliner and 335is specific interior stuff, IS exhaust, IS clutch and FW, better cooling, etc. I would have bought an MT 335is over a DCT if I could have found one.

I would get a 2015 or 2016 z4 with an n54 if I was in the market. Or a 1m if you can find one.

Just to clarify, NONE of the n54s have forged pistons - at least not from factory. Forged rods and crank but not pistons. There are some differences between the newer and older versions of n54 but all have hypereutectic pistons - a stronger variety of cast pistons due to the method used.

I personally think the 335is is the best option (excluding the 1M - at least twice the price) when it comes to the n54 platform. As it has already been mentioned, it has better cooling, comes with all the visual bits, a better sounding exhaust (I still prefer the PE but that's not a factory installed option), etc. But, as it has also already been mentioned, it's hard to find one with an MT.

07: make sure it's the 6MT and has the oil cooler (needed to have sports package and speed rated 18's). Don't get 07 or early 08 autos, you can't flash the TCU without retrofits.

09+: if idrive and fancy taillights are important to you.

335is if dual clutch auto trans is important to you. They also have an aux radiator and beefier radiator fan, among other minor differences. 6mt 335is is an enthusiast dream, as it has a better clutch as well.

M-sport package gets you all that crap.

I'll give you the cooling for sure but the DCT is what makes the is special IMO. Truth is though if you want to turn then just get the M3...it's better in every way

I've driven plenty of e92 M3s and would never buy one before a 335is. ever.
