DSC steering angle issue

07 Z4 3.0si - did an auto to manual conversion.

In DIS, I checked the "Steering Angle at Steering Wheel", and it doesn't move past -0 when turning the wheel. BUT, LWS Steering Angle Sensor module shows the wheel angle changing correctly, so the sensor should be working. I also get power steering while driving, just stiffer than normal. I did try to recalibrate the steering angle but DIS kept telling me it could not complete the angle setup. Not sure if it matters...

Secondly, in the Power Steering module, it throws an error "611E EPS - Vehicle Speed", with details: "43: Signal Drop out, CAN road speed". Schematics shows the DSC module sends the EPS module vehicle road speed through CAN bus. Now, I have ABS, and I get correct wheel speed on all four wheel sensors, as well as correct road speed in the KOMBI meter.

This has me confused on how to fix. I'm chasing down a RED Brake light and Traction control YELLOW light on my dash (ABS light is not on)...

What is the steering wheel sensor module? Are you referring to the DSC? Try with ISTA D Rheingold.

Just for info, there is Recall Issue for the z4. Does your VIN fall into the VIN brackets?

-------
BMW has found that on some BMWs, variations in electrical current within the EPS can lead to sudden loss of power steering assistance.

Sudden loss of power steering assistance may increase the steering effort required to control the direction of the car, increasing the risk of a crash.

BMW is recalling the affected BMWs and replacing the steering box.

BMW Z4s Affected By This Recall

There are 699 BMWs (across all models) affected by this recall. They have VINs in the ranges:-

WBAUY12020F210543 to WBAUY12070F210571
WBAKK32030E747495 to WBAKK32030E747674
WBAUR12070VR33453 to WBAUR12020VR34137
WBAUT32080F214901 to WBAUT320XOF214995
WBAKK320X0E651492 to WBAKK32090E651645

Sorry, meant the LWS Steering Angle Sensor "module" under DIS.

My VIN starts with 4USD, and last 7 digits don't fall into those categories... thanks for the heads up.

I believe thats because there is coding problem and DSC does not understands vehicle speed.

how did you code the car after swap?

It almost seems like DSC and EPS aren't talking to each other, but they can both be accessed through CAN individually ( I can monitor values in DIS and INPA).

After conversion, I programmed KOBMI by removing S205A via "Enter VO/FA", then "Process Car", "Code Car". Seemed standard from other threads/instructions I've read.

I went through NCSExpert both EPS module and MK60 modules, reviewed their FSW_PSW settings, didn't catch anything odd. MK60 did have "manual trans" listed. Same thing was noted on KOMBI.

Did some research, turns out the KOMBI displays road speed from left-rear speed sensor filtered through the DSC unit (and that works). But, the EPS module receives the speed signal from the DSC directly via CAN, not a direct link. I don't think there is any coding that would disable that communication?

Also, I didn't touch the DME w/regards to programming. Also, in DIS, the Vehicle Speed for the EPS (electric power steering module) shows 80km/hr while at idle. I bet it is some failsafe value...

do you have any codes in DME?

You need little manipulation in INPA on DME, instructions are in my swap thread
here it is:

there are some coding options, you can't set or clear with NCS, because they are "selft learnd". It's common with all ECU in PT-CAN, engine, automatic gearbox and DSC.
Once connected to PT-CAN and turned ignition ON, alle ECU communicata and exchange data. E.g. DME learns that there is a automatic gearbox, towbar-module, Active cruise control etc. These option flags are stored and are not be deleted be interupting power supply.
You have to reset your engine ecu and dsc so they "forget" the automatic transmisson. Next time you turn ignition on, they will learn the options of the car again an troublecodes about missing gearbox-ecu will dissapear.

Choose MSD80 -> F5 (status analog/digital) -> F1 (digital values) -> F5 (vehicle options)
If automatic transmission is still displayed, press F8 to clear values.

Ok. INPA communicates with MK60 DSC, but when trying to read error codes, I get "ERROR ECU SUBFUNCTION NOT SUPPORTED". I get the same error in DISv57. Thus, I can't pull any codes from the DSC. I can actuate the DSC pump via DIS, and can monitor many values from the DSC, thus it does communicate.

I did see Automatik trans selected in the DME (MSV70), and disabled like you mentioned. Cycled power, and it now remains off. I didn't find a location in the DSC to disable automatic transmission, unless the menus are different through INPA.

Issues are still there unfortunately.

Fixed- I had done some wiring at the IVM module, and cut out pin 3,4,5,6 on connector X60194. Did some research, turns out those are CAN signals that need to be bridged. I now get communication. I was tipped in DIS when it gave me a clue for the DSC CAN communication fault "check can wires".
