Cheapest BMW spec LL-01 or LL-04 oil any brand any grade?
Hi
I have the infamous 320i N46 engine which is now burning oil - getting around 420 miles max per litre of oil. I've had the CCV / oil breather pipe replaced as well as nearly everything where oil leaks have occurred (rocket cover, rocker cover gasket, vacuum pump, o-rings, oil filler cap, sump pan gasket). To dismantle the engine and get the valve stem seals and/or piston rings replaced is a £600+ job so I'm looking to top up when the oil level is at minimum as I don't want to keep the car too much longer (it's 11 years already). So my question is I want the cheapest BMW spec, LL-01 or LL-04, oil which is 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-30 or 5W-40, brand is not important and the bigger the bottle the cheaper probably so that's 4L for UK bottles and 5L for German ones typically. Buying a couple or more can give discounts I found "Carlube Triple R 5W-40 Fully Synthetic Motor Oil 4L" for £15 that's £3.75/L can this be beaten? http://www.carlube.co.uk/triple-r/ca...ully-synthetic Carlube is manufactured by Tetrosyl. I haven't found much difference in oil consumption between a -30 or -40 oil, the thicker -40 oil did give more mileage a year a go but not now. Thank you |

I bought 20 litre of engine oil last week for mytyres, it took a while to arrive but overall happy with the service. I think the items are sent out from Germany!

You need LL-04. LL-01 is for high sulphur content fuels (AUS, USA etc)

Ok. So this doesn’t relate to a BMW engine, but a similar situation.
It’s worth trying different brands….. The wifes Toyota Yaris (diesel) used 1 litre every 1000miles. Toyota said that consumption was ‘normal’. (I think it was Castrol SLX) The spec of the oil used was LL04 so I could use it in my 325D if necessary. Bought some ‘bulk’ from Opie Oils to get the price down. Fuchs TITAN GT1 XTL 5W-40 Used at least 80 litres of that and needed more, but the price had gone up a lot. Found another brand at a similar price to what we’d been paying for the Fuchs. (Still at Opie). Gulf Formula ULE 5W-40 Oil consumption dropped dramatically when that was used in the next oil service. Was then getting more than 3000 miles per litre. Same driving situation. (Short journeys – driving instructor). (PS. The 325d has never used a drop of oil between services in 95k miles).

If you can find a place that will do your valve stem seals with the head in situ it should greatly reduce costs. I had my 320i seals done that way so I know it's possible with the n46 lump.
