BMW Newbie, when to go for first oil change?
I got my 328i sedan about 2 months ago now. I'm already on 4xxx miles, and it came to my mind that I have to go get my first oil change before 5k miles. Do I need to get a oil change at 5k ? and also, do i need to make a appointment with the dealer, or can i do a walk-in ? i also need to get some other check ups as well...
thanks a lot. |

Be aware that if you get a "unscheduled" oil change (i.e. before bmw says you need one which is generally around 15000 miles). You WILL have to pay out of pocket for it.

Many owners-like me-prefer to get oil changes at least twice a year.
I pay for 1 and BMW the other. It costs me about $110.00 but is worth it to me, and I go to my BMW dealer. Hope this helps |

How can anyone tell you if you need an appointment if we don't know who your dealer is? Call your dealer and ask.

Follow Up Question: I have been reading about computer glitches and maintenance intervals. I have a 2007 328xi in service 9/2007, I am not at 15,000+ miles and called for an oil change. The car tells me that I still have 14,000 miles before I will need one. Am I really to believe that these cars can go 29,000 miles before an oil change is required? Is there any BMW policy other than "the computer will tell you when service is necessary"? Anyone had any luck? Thanks!

my CA here in Germany told me when i purchased the car to get my first oil change at 1,500 mi ... just after the break-in was over. Then go off the computer after that.

My CA told me the first oil change is at 24000km (15000 miles) and te computer shows the same thing. Iill follow that, since my dealer also said that these engines use synthetic oil (or something like that) so they don't need to be changed as often.
Hope this helped.

im a tech...if its a lease...follow what it says unless you plan to buy it out because honestly why waste your money? if you bought it...every 5-7k after initial breakin...

interesting you guys mention if it is "unscheduled" you have to pay for it....because I have had to go in for a quart of oil four times about every 2k miles and im in and out without any problems =)
