Bilstein HD rear shocks + stock front struts - 2007 328i

My rear shocks aren't doing too good and I'm looking to find a replacement. I came across Bilstein HD's as a reasonably affordable replacement and was wondering if anyone has any experience using only the rear shocks along with stock e90 front struts.

Here's the link-

I'm also gonna need new dust boots and bumper.

I put B4 sports on the front and B6 HD Bilsteins on the back our E92 with sport suspension. Works great. I changed them out at 82K. Both the original oem front struts and rear shocks were completely gone.

I think you'll be happy with that choice.

If that's all you can afford for the time being, that setup should work fine. Make sure to upgrade the upper rear mounts while you're at it too (there's a cheap Monroe option floating around this sub-forum somewhere).

I would plan on upgrading the front struts as early as possible too though.

This. The fronts aren't far behind, they'll be worn out soon.

So if I end up deciding to replace everything at the same time is Bilstein or KONY going to be a more affordable option and what exactly should I replace?

If that is all you can afford at this time, that should be okay. However, Bilstein is a monotube high pressure damper. If you want to stay with the same design, go with Koni Yellows or other twin tube low pressure shocks out there.

+1 on upper mount upgrade. I used Dinan, but the Monroe compare very well and are much cheaper. Easy, easy install.

Since you're there, you could replace lower mounts as well. I replaced mine with shocks at about 80-85k because I was already disassembling everything. That said, they were in good shape and I could have saved a few bucks there. Uppers are a must, however!!

You should really replace all 4 corners at the same time but if you can't at least plan on doing the fronts soon.

Bilstein B4 or B6 are very popular options along with Koni Yellow.

having b8 or b6 rear shocks with stock fronts will work. Both bilsteins have more bump stiffness and rebound stiffness than the stock shock. This will yield more rotation in trailing throttle situations - can be a desirable trait.

There is already excessive compression damping on the OEM struts and shocks, that is why the ride is not particularly good over rough roads and expansion joints. Then there is insufficient rebound damping, the lack of control and excessive bounce is partly due to this. Having both increased is certainly better than none.

What about going with SRT.T all around? I don't plan on lowering my car any time soon though. I'm really just looking to get the suspension fixed.

Nothing wrong with with the STR as stock replacement struts and shocks.

This is what I am considering doing on my E91. I picked up a set of B6 rears very cheap but the B6 front struts seem to have all of a sudden started increasing to almost B8 cost.

I've got a bit of time so I'm waiting to see if Bilstein has a sale at some point but probably will end up with the B4's.

I siwtched over to the koni orange which i replace for my blown sport suspension shocks. Im not a huge fan mainly due to the fact that the car sits higher overall. In length the rear shocks are a little longer as well. I will personally be switching to b4 as i want me of the sport suspenion look and ride. They are also a little soft to be honest.
