I had a 2011 GTI and it's stereo sucked. Vw dosent invest a lot in this area. It was one of the nice surprises for me how much better the BMW hk system was. The fender is better too than the GTI. Plus the worlds worst touch screen stereo that took years to scroll through sat radio stations. Even my 2008 X5 is sadly better than my GTI was in that regard.

Mine was a Hi-Fi and it was an easy stock amp replacement with that Audiotec Fischer. Plugs into the factory harness and makes a dramatic difference to your listening experience.

Base stereo (without front tweeters and amp and only with 6 speakers) did come in the 2010 and early 2011 model year in the US.

But the OP's pictures show the HiFi or HK version (tweeters in doors.)

Floyd, can you give a cutoff date for early 2011 that still had the base? My 2011 production date is 11/2010 and it has the tweeters in the front sail panels (but no harmon kardon labels). So, I guess I have hifi!

Once again, yozh brings a wealth of information to us. thanks. I need to check into the amplifier upgrade.

I used https://www.bmwdecoder.com/ and it told me what stereo I had. So far it has been spot on.

Sounds like June is considered early by Floyd's comment. Change was somewhere between June and November. I looked up my VIN in the decoder and it said S676A, HIFI speaker system

After installing Iaknown's intake and exhaust I have had no urge to listen to radio

Go to the Audio subforum, there's a sticky detailing all. I have the OEM Alpine (European) upgrade in mine (which was delivered in Nov 2009, so quite early.)
