Pre-mod recommendations
I'm inches away from buying mhd for my 2012 e92 335i but before I do, is there anything anyone would recommend I do or buy before I add a tune? Even just for precautionary measures because I'd like to do everything as safely and as smart as possible

Lots of posts on this , most important thing is to make sure engine is serviced properly. The tune will expose any weaknesses. So depending on your mileage and when the last time you had it blasted , changed the pugs ect ect

Plugs, coils, charge pipe, diverter valve (if you want - not necessary but nice preventative item and inexpensive), and all fluids and filters (except transmission fluid/filter and fuel filter as they're difficult and expensive - you can get to those later)

Echoing others above on the coils and plugs and chargepipe [just to err on the side of preventive maintenance].
After those are squared away I'd say catless downpipe - a reasonable power adder, and with a solid tune to take advantage of it.

Charge pipe is your biggest thing to change, then plugs if it's been 60k miles. After that, you can look into an intercooler to get the most out of it. You've already got an oil cooler, but if you experience temperatures > 250, you'll want to get a bigger one.

Consider a baseline dyno if you plan to dyno in the future. I wish I'd dyno'd my car before I started modding. Didn't start til after the mod bug bit me.

1. Plugs, filters, fluids, oil, etc. 2. ER FMIC + ER CP + DV 3. Catless DP (not sure on brand) 4. MHD All seems to be pretty reliable so far. What about oil catch can? I've read people recommending those as well. And what DP's are the best? |

I would do VRSF for the DP, with their new cast end it is a killer deal. I would look at them for the FMIC too. ER is good, but quite a bit more.

Read my sig. I have the very basic's of Mods. No issues yet except for running a little rich so it appears my injectors or HPFP might be on the horizon. N55 engines are suppposed to be more reliable than the N54 for what that's worth. Just check all fluids and get those up to speed. Tune your car last after you add on the bit n pieces. Good luck!

Historically, not to get off topic, the only issues I have had with prior BMW's are a 545i and a 750 I had, 04 and 06 models. Had the same engine....issue was at a stop sign, take off and it feel like someone rearended you. Transmission issue was the culprit so some either had a new transmission put or they did some software upgrade or found a minor part issue to resolve. Other than no issues will the 10 I have purchased over the years THANK GOD! I've not much of a long-term BMW owner anyway cuz i know it's going to be expensive down the road. Don't like the idea of getting stranded on the highway or getting the call from the wife and hear her bitching. Good luck with your build and mods. It's addicting as hell! |
