Dang, that pic is deceiving. Still, they're like $10 different in cost. I'm skeptical.

As a landscaper go with the 6x6. I've seen a huge difference in the amount of time they last compared to 4x4s. You'll save the money in the long run if you plan to stay long. That neighbor needs to fix his lawn, that doesn't help the fence either. Water splash is no good plus the turf will suck up moisture.

Hey jgoens are you set to get as much water as they are telling us for this weekend? We are hearing 3-6 inches Friday/Sat here locally. Dang, we only get 11 in an average year. . . glad I already sent that check to FEMA again this year!

Sounds like you guys get a turn in getting a dumping--you need it more than us--there are three storms coming in(one of them is here now) but they are supposed to be light delivering a few inches at best. Yeah, for you guys 6 inches translates to get the canoe out.

6-10 in the hills above the coast

No canoe, but when it gets high enough the longboards will float free. Should have bought that new fishing slicker already . . .

Most likely they will be using an auger and might not have the right size to make a hole big enough to allow room for concrete. Plus I know I hate when people buy materials for jobs, just another step that can cause delays.

What I would recommend is to build a 3 feet wall cinder block wall, and add some wood bolted on top. You can stain it, or leave it as is. This won't break the bank, and leaves it stylish.

Good idea. Can you bolt things to cinder block?

Of course. I've seen a wall being built at a winery, The contractors bolted a 2 x 4 laying on top of the cinderblock wall and then added the wooden fence wall to it. Or you can do something like this:

Or you can add vinyl fencing on top which will also look good.

A solid foundation wall can present a real drainage problem unless drain pipes are built into them.

I was actually joking--that is a pretty nice setup and I have seen those before. I think the posts must be down a few feet in the cinderblock as cinderblock cracks like hell very easy.

Which can be taken care by digging a trench, adding some predrilled 6" inch pipes along the way, diverted away to street, covered with gravel around, and beneath.

nothing is bulletproof. But some things are made to last longer.

The nicer fence would cost about $5K while the crappier style would be $1000 less. So, basically we would each pay $500 more assuming a split.
But he said if we want the nicer fence then we can pay the difference. My wife says why are we going to pay $2k for a fence we don't like when we could pay $500 more for the nicer one--which, by the way does match the style of his back fence as well.
As for insurance our deductible is $2500, which is no help and his is $1400.

Normally, I'd say 6x6 and do it right. But, I read on another thread that you are thinking about Dinan Shockware. For for the extra $500 the better posts would cost (your 1/2) you could get Dinan Shockware. The crappier posts will last 10 years. In 10 years you can beat your self up for choosing the cheaper alternative. The Dinan Shockware will make you smile each day. Since your are clearly car first, yard second, the choice is pretty simple

Damn..that is funny..I literally laughed at that...and I rarely actually laugh at a post even if I think they are funny and entertaining(which is often). I wish things were as easy as eradicating a skunk.
