Interior Floor Pans for E90

Hi Folks,

For the people who have fully gutted and stripped out cars, how have you solved the problem of pedal height when you removed the front carpet? The carpet is fairly thick and once removed, your feet will come down lower than normal. I know VAC sells aluminium floor pans that correct that problem but it feels counter intuitive. Remove lightweight carpet only to install metal floor pan risers...

Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

The carpet isn't lightweight and it isn't sitting directly on the floorpan of the body shell, there's a lot of sound deadening and heat insulating underlayment that's quite heavy and thick which drops your heel a lot further than you think.

The risers and aluminum floorpan are standard methods which nearly everyone uses although if you want to drop nearly a grand you can get some Nomex honeycomb carbon fiber plates from Dragonplate and have them machined to the right shapes but you'll still need risers welded into the body pan to mount them, but they will be lighter than aluminum and they will offer some sound and heat insulation so your heel doesn't feel like it's on fire after some time on the track.

The aluminum floorplan solution makes mounting the dead pedal easier and minimizes the cost and trouble associated with moving to an underfoot mounted pedal box down the road. But it is more miserable to drive on the street especially in the summer and stop and go traffic.

Good info. Do you have those aluminium floor pan risers on your car? If so would you mind posting a picture or two please? Which brand do you have?

I was only able to find VAC ones

The car is still at the cage shop but when it comes back to the race shop they'll custom fabricate all the parts. Will get pictures during the process and will post them in my build thread (referenced in my BMW Garage here).

Thanks! I am thinking I might get the VAC floor pan risers and then gluing sandpaper on top of it so that my shoes don't slide too much when it is wet.

Use ISC non-skid tape instead -- http://www.racerstape.com/rtp.html scroll down to it, std stuff in race cars. Sandpaper won't hold, won't stand up to water, and the grit will easily be ground off by your shoes and get all over the interior and under the floorpans.

Glad to help.

ISC's helicopter, or leading edge, tape is handy to protect roll bar or cage sections from marring or scratching. Same for leading edges on the car's front end to minimize stone chipping on the track, etc. They make good stuff, found in race shops and online, they're the go-to guys.
