Tire Wear

Hello, last August I replaced my rear tires because they were wearing out the insides and even showing cords in some places. As soon as they were replaced I had all 4 tires aligned to prevent this in the future. Yesterday I was doing a little checking on the car and noticed the fronts, especially right front, are starting to wear on the inside bad. They were wearing fine with even tread depths when I replaced rears and aligned it but now wearing off. Do these cars typically do this? I will attached pic of my alignment specs when I get home, if you have experience please tell me if the numbers look right to you. Thanks!

The images aren't loading. Excessive wear inside the tread of a tire is usually camber out of adjustment. Was the camber around 1 degree negative? Give or take a half degree.

I would check your toe settings. That is most likely causing your excessive wear. I run -2.5 camber up front with zero problems.

Don't know why pics aren't showing I'll just type it out

Before the alignment:
LF / RF
Camber -0.8 / Camber-1.5
Toe 0.23 / Toe -0.23 = Total Toe 0.00
Steer Ahead 0.23

LR / RR
Camber -1.7 / Camber -1.9
Toe -0.01 / Toe -0.34 = Total Toe -0.35

After:
LF / RF
Camber -0.7 / Camber -1.1
Toe 0.12 / Toe 0.10 = Total Toe 0.22
Steer Ahead 0.01

LR / RR
Camber -1.7 / Camber -1.9
Toe 0.10 / Toe 0.16 = Total Toe 0.25

BMW sits these cars up with negative camber so they burn the inside of the tires off first. I buy nondirectional tires so I can flip them from left to right as I see wear showing, I also have my alignment adjusted every three months with no more than -1.0 on camber. I hate to get only 15000 miles out of 300$.tires.

To give you another data point, the last measurement I have is as follows:
Camber
LF: -1.8
RF: -1.8
LR: -1.9
RR: -1.9
Toe
LF and RF: 0.00"
LR and LF: 0.00"

If you can see my signature block, you can see I have a heavily modified suspension with camber plates.

I run a square setup; not staggered. So I rotate front to back.

I also wear out the inner ribs long before the rest of the tire. In fact, I was down to the metal once and the tire gave out.

I got about 22K on my Michelin Pilot Super Sports after the suspension work and alignment, and am about that same mileage on the current tires, a set of Nitto Motivos. I think they will last a couple of thousand more if I don't swap out before that. The indy shops and tire shops I have talked to seem to think that's reasonably normal. I think the PSS are warranted to 30k.

Here is my spec sheet from an alignment done on Christmas Eve. I had it done because I noticed some scalloping. I don't know what it is but I have noticed this car gets out of alignment more frequently than my cars of past. I'm averaging one alignment every 6 mo. with stock tires, no suspension mods, no track days, and active road-imperfection-avoidance. I'm glad I still have a few years left on an alignment package from my s2000.

So looks like they just wear tires out huh? My 335D is my wifes car and its driven real gently no track days or anything sadly so I put on Bridgestone Drivegaurds in the rear. Think I'll do the same with the front, 60k mile warranty. They seem to actually have more grip than the Pilot Super Sports when I have gotten a wild hair and slapped it around a little.

People keep talking about the general time frame between alignments but what does that come out to in mileage? I don't drive very much so my 6 months of driving could equal someone else's 1 month of mileage

Good point. For me, every 6mos means roughly 7,000 miles.

My last alignment was 55,000 miles ago. The car's handling and tire-wear characteristics haven't changed in any way that I can detect. Since I will be getting yet another suspension upgrade in the not-too-distant future, an alignment will be done at that time.

I have experienced the usual assortment of awful roads and potholes during that time.

Upgrades go fast parts aside.....if your car is in need of alignment that frequently, then something is wrong with the car. Today's bmws don't just 'fall out of alignment'. Frequent alignments are only masking bigger issues.

I concur, toe is the culprit. I run close to -2.0 camber up front with no wear issues. Toe being out of spec, even slightly, will tear tires up QUICK! Statically, your car's toe may be in spec, dynamically it can be out due to worn bushings and/or suspension components. Time for upgrade perhaps? I'd use my tire wear as a legit excuse for upgrades.
