New Engine Mounts

Hi all,

I posted on this on the general forum but for understandable reasons didn't get much of a response.

I'm trying to understand whether replacing the engine and transmission mounts on my E90 335i will prevent the issue of the serpentine belt hitting the subframe and shredding. Or, rather, the power steering pulley hitting the subframe, ripping its edges, and then shredding the belt.

I have had the tensioner, all pulleys, and the belt replaced within the last 6 to 9 months, but the other day I noticed pieces of shredded belt on the belly pan. I'm conscious of the risk of the belt finding its way into the crankcase through the front crank seal, as reported from the US.

Since the car is 10 years old now, the replacement subframe option isn't one for me - too dear and not worth it - so instead I ordered new engine mounts (one of which is supposed to be an upgraded one used on the 'is' model), and new transmission mounts.

Hopefully this will get the engine back into the correct position and stop the unit being able to move under load? Has anyone had the same issue and fixed it via this method?

Cheers,
Rob

Hi Rob,

yes it will help to reduce the movement of the engine which causes this issue.
The proper fix is as you say to replace the axle support and arm as per the service bulletin issued in the States.

Thanks - hopefully it's enough to stop it happening again. Shame one miscalculation like this can cause such major damage!

If the engine is moving that much as to hit any thing when breaking then, YES, replace the engine mounts, sounds like they are fubard.
