SES Light - Code 4BAC - now 474C and 49A5
Argh. My SES light came on on my way to work.
![]() I pulled the code from Carly and it says: 4BAC: Reducing agent active tank level sensor signal sensor monitoring error. ![]() I looked at this thread and it looks like the only way to fix it is to replace the DEF tank? http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=935056 Oh man. Looks like I have a costly repair bill coming up...? Anyone else have experience with the 4BAC code and how it was resolved? Thanks. Edit: Forgot to include I'm well out of warranty, I have almost 83k miles.

Just a quick update. Shortly after the 4BAC code came on, I got the low DEF no start in 999 miles notification. Found out that the shop I took it to prior for an oil change and DEF refill did NOT refill the active tank. I bought DEF, added about 2 gallons, and the low DEF notice and SES 4BAC code went away automatically.
Now I have a new issue. Today I got the following: Error code: 49A5 - Receive news of IBS LIN-bus communication Error code: 474C - DFC I did a few searches and found the following threads: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=953550 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1134503 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1175518 Looks like mixed responses. Some suggested replacing the glow plug controller, battery, or (possibly) replacing the glow plugs and or injectors. My battery is 3 years old. I reset the codes for now, wondering if they'll appear again tomorrow. Anyone else experience 49A5 or 474C? I couldn't find a definitive answer or solution to these codes.

If you had your DEF tank empty and then refilled and code went away, you may wish to play with your DEF a bit more. If it is old, perhaps a DEF drain, flush and refill with fresh might do the trick. Flush is key as you may have some crystallization on the level sensors that may be throwing logic for a loop. Otherwise, there is thread somewhere that speaks to temp sensor replacement. Last step to replace the function unit as posted in the thread above. That will take care of the temp sensor too. Here: Last edited by Yozh; 03-18-2017 at 01:08 AM.. |

Thank you so much Yozh for sharing this valuable information. Turns out that 49A5 was indeed the glow plug controller. Replaced it and all is good.
As for the DEF code, the shop I took it to previously didn't fill up the DEF tank even though I paid for it as part of the oil change. So I'm never going back to that shop again. I bought DEF myself, filled up the empty tank and everything went away regarding that particular code. With all that said, yesterday morning I got these new codes: 4B90 - Rail pressure at engine start-to-low 480A - Particle filter system 4AE6 - Set zero adjustment cylinder 2 injector 4593 - Smoothness regulator cylinder 2 inspector correction amount by adjusting the range For code 480A, I referenced SI B18 03 10 and performed the steps in ca2del's post here. Code 480A went away. I'm not sure about the other 3, but I reset everything yesterday and codes 4593 and 4AE6 came back today. The car idles rough, and it hesitates when I accelerate at slow speed (ie. accelerate from a light). This is probably the fourth time codes 4593 and 4AE6 have shown up. I had CBU cleanup performed 24k miles ago in Dec 2015. I have a hard time believing it's CBU again. Adaptations were reset a few months ago. Maybe it's time to reset them again per SI B13-04-14? I didn't use ISTA last time around. By chance does anyone in Norcal bay area or valley have ISTA that could do this for me?
