Question any reason for oil filter cap o-ring to fail?

just had my +qt. light come on on my 2011 n51. only took a couple of seconds to figure out what happened. about a 1/4 inch of the o-ring has pushed out. oil was change last month (about 1000 miles} ago no leaks till today. I'm not claiming to be infallible but, I am not new to this 50 years working on cars, 2 2011 bmws I do the maintenance on and I am a mechanic by trade. Not an auto mechanic but I know which end of the wrench to hold.
my plan in new filter new gasket careful install. just wanted to check if there is anything I am missing that could cause this ie. pressure issue. or is defective O-ring or my screw up the only possibilities. car har 70,000 miles all oem parts from tisher bmw

Like the outer big oring that's visible with the cap on was defective(or maybe you installed it wrong)? I bought a exon filter and the oring was noticibly worse than my Mann one. You could feel the crease from the mold they used or however it was made. Clearly this goes out the window with an OEM filter, (which is Mann anyway, if I'm not mistaken) but I absolutely could see a defective ring the problem. Do you rub oil around the oring before you put it on? Idk why but I was told to do that. If it happens again my vote is the oil filter cap

thanks I was able to unscrew cap by hand, never was able to before. I could not budge the one on the z4 n52 change oil same day but fewer miles. everything looked good so I re-tightened it added 2 qts of oil and reset the codes. guess i'll watch it hopefully no leaks. I got a low oil code and a code P1124 BMW - Differential Pressure Sensor Intake Manifold Adaptation it cleared and did not come back, I guess I will monitor that 2
