Is my harmonic balancer bad?

2011 335D 63k miles

Other night driving, power steering went out, AC not functioning properly, red battery light flashing on dash. Reading the forums this sounds like I need to replace the crank pulley and the belts. What y'all think?

Smoking coming from the pulley. Smells like burnt rubber.

Well, the picture doesn't look good. There are a few threads with tips and instructions as well as best places to purchase a replacement damper. Good luck.

yep, all of the classic symptoms. The still pictures definitely show the rubber in the harmonic balance to be fried. I think OmahaDZL's "Losing my freakin mind, this car is killing me. Now Crank shaft pulley?" thread shows different places people have bought replacement harmonic dampers (that's the term for crank pulley). I will go fish up his thread link for you.

EDIT: I just noticed you are in Houston and apparently a UH Cougar. I will add you to that list in the link at 63,000 miles

Thanks BB_cuda yeah I've been reading those few big threads, hoping for the best, looks like I'll be having to do the replacement.

And yeah, from Houston! Wanna come help? Will likely overnight parts. I'm by 288 and BW8.

Your on other side of world from me. Gulf Freeway at El Dorado. Going out of town for a wedding this weekend too. I've actually not done the harmonic balance change either. I need to learn before my time comes.

Hey another Houston fellow! If you want, join us on the Facebook group. I believe there are 3 other folks form Houston in there. I'm up in College Station.

Also, here is a thread containing a good DIY guide on how to replace the Harmonic Balancer/Cranksaft Pulley/Vibration Dampener. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1380230

Not always a full failure. Sometimes it goes by starting to rattle. That is a first sign.

Thanks for the response folks. For me, I did not notice any warning signs. Just randomly smelled the rubber, loss of power steering, ac not running, and the red battery light in the dash.

I ordered my parts off of ECS, going to pick up the 4 torx bolts from the stealership. Going to tackle this job today and tomorrow with some friends, following Mik325tds guide.

As a senior member of the HB club I HIGHLY suggest getting the stretch belt remover... buy/borrow/rent....whatever... but dont be as arrogant as me and think you can/should do it without.

(I did....I just spent an extra hour of frustration accomplishing a 4 min task
