You open up the mufflers, replace the pipe in there with a straight one. I'll send you a DIY when I get home!

Super Sprint is a great exhaust but if you have to ask if it's worth it, it probably isn't. In the case of performance per dollar it stacks up as the lowest.

Thanks for that bit of info, I figured after I read that thread a few posts up with the low HP gain compared to HKS that it may not be worth all that $$$..

As far as the opening of our mufflers goes, is that something any exhaust shop can do or does it take some ingenuity? I'd rather not take it to Meineke or something of that nature if I could avoid it, but if it's a simple job then obviously I'd entertain my options..

1. Tune. I prefer the Cobb, but the JB4 isn't a bad choice.
2. Intake
3. FMIC
4. Downpipes
5. Update your tune

After that it depends on your goals. FBO is followed by more serious stuff like methane injection, turbo upgrade (or even a single turbo kit), and so on.

I'm not sure if anyone out there has done internals on these cars, but I'm new to BMW myself - does anyone do pistons/rods/valves/valve springs/cranks/etc?

I remember on my Civic SI before I went turbo, rods/pistons/rings etc were all MUSTS for the power I wanted..! I had kept the stock valvetrain and it help up just fine, but I was just over 400hp and those heads are rated well over 500hp on the B series VTEC motors.. And for my 335i I'll probably not get into the whole single turbo HUGE power thing just because it's my daily driver and I'd like to keep it that way for a while.. But FBO/Tune sounds good to me =) but I'd love for my exhaust note to sound more aggressive w/o killing my wallet haha..

Unplug the exhaust flapper valve. In your trunk, be the driver's taillight under the trunk trim, there's a two wire harness. Unplug it. It'll make it louder. There's a flapper valve in the factor muffler that's closed most of the time but opens under aggressive driving for louder sound (and maybe more power?). If you unplug the harness, it stays open all the time.

Mine's like that - it's not obnoxious, but it's way better than stock.

As for internals, yeah, I don't think anyone here is doing that. I did it on my old EM1 before boosting, myself. But I've learned that the factory BMW stuff is pretty stout - there are guys here running in the 475 wheel hp neighborhood on full bolt ons (FBO), methanol injection, and custom tune. They're running mid 11s, and adding nitrous seems to break low 11s.

It seems the factory rods are forged, and the factory pistons are hyper eutectic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypereutectic_piston). The crank is forged from the factory as well.

It does seem like no one can break into the consistent 10s without drag radials, but that's no surprise to me. Doing tens on full street tires isn't easy on ANY platform that isn't AWD. THEY seem amazed by that, whereas I'm amazed that they find needing drag radials to get consistent 10s or better to be anything less that utterly obvious.

If a mod costs more than 15% of my car's value I tend to stay away unless it's something drastic like a single turbo kit.
Truly wise words!
