FWIW, my '11 128i M Sport met its ultimate demise last month. both front and side curtain airbags deployed and functioned as designed. My car was part of the Takata recall and was waiting for parts to arrive. The car was in Florida for its entire life.

Thank you for the reassuring words. Perhaps you can contact the Federal government and tell them to cancel the recall.

Takata is filing for bankrupcy. Wonder how the recalls will be performed from now on with the ultimate responsible party defunct.

It was due to a defect in the inflators, and some people were killed when airbag inflator shrapnel struck them. There is video of defective inflators tearing through the tough airbag fabric. My understanding is BMW only used Takata airbags on cars that were repaired after an accident and needed new airbags. Is this not the case, did they use Takata airbags on new vehicles?

The recalls will continue to be performed by the manufacturers' dealers. The bankruptcy may stop Takata's bleeding, but the manufacturers have always been and still are on the hook.

So, from the consumer's perspective nothing will change.

While this article is not a model of clarity, it appears that 14,600 Takata inflators were involved in repaired vehicles (last paragraph of article), and another 230,000 were installed in new vehicles (first paragraph). http://www.autonews.com/article/2017...g-fresh-recall
