FWD and RWD operate differently especially under load and turning. A lot of this insert could be found in 8.8 Ford diffs and some GM diff built by Eaton. Either with one leaf spring or two plates with four washers like discussed here. Let's do a research how frequently these fail. See bellow for reference only:

the ones in the 8.8 actually work pretty well, that's the "leaf spring" kind, with clutch packs. Straight metal on metal, not sure how that would fair..

I still wouldn't trust a random insert to a vital component in our drivetrain. Especially how much torque these N54s produce. Those Ford diffs you posted are not "just" inserts. They are the whole Diff that is modified and designed to accept the insert with Carbon/Kevlar Clutch Packs.

Like I said for reference only that I decided to use to show the similarities. As you said these are whole units but not all have clutches on the spider gears. Every diff could fail and until I see one installed that caused premature failure I won't write this off. If I do that as most here have done it will be based on price point and that is wrong. As we have seen even reputable LSD that are $2k fail.
