E85 in trunk.
I keep a couple gas cans of E85 in my trunk when I need to fill up if I'm not around an E85 gas station. I noticed that my trunk gets very hot and heats up the fuel. The cans always swell up like they're going to explode. Should I be concerned? Also does the heat do anything to the quality of the fuel?

If your gas can is OSHA compliant, it should have a vent, to avoid the swelling.

Unsafe either way you want to look at: be it the fumes being released into your car or just having gas all the time in your trunk in the event you get into an accident.

My 5 gallon vents into the trunk enough to smell it when I transport it home. About an hour drive. I couldn't imagine just leaving it in there!
I keep my windows open and the rear seats down when I do this and immediately remove the can when I get to the garage. Those fumes could be the end of you if it reaches a spark.

Do you really want it venting in the trunk with the battery being close by? Just curious as I haul my own fuel from time to time when I go out of town.

I keep my tank on the rear carpet. I always keep all of my windows and sunroof open and drive like a senile grandma when transporting it. Still gives me anxiety every time.
Get venting tanks and be really careful/willing to burn to a crisp. |
