335i e92 knocking/clunking sound whilst driving

Hi all,

Im hoping to pick your brains and gain some advice on the next steps of solving a strange knocking sound Im getting while driving.

Im the 2nd owner of my e92 n54 335i and have owned since 82k. Shes coming up to 136k now and ive owned her for just short of 3 years.

The problem Im having is imnoticing a strange clunking noise wholst driving and have been for the past 12 months. This recent month its far more freqeunt and pretty much present all the time when in motion.

The sou d is almost like something dangling and knocking off the side of something, swinging into plastic walls almost. It doesnt respond to the accelerator, its more of a wheels in motion trigger. It doesnt seem to respond to steering wheel activity either nor am I getting any fault codes or driving problems associated with it. I still drive her hard when shes warm and no noticable effects.

Ive recently removed the undertray as it was damaged and had s feel around but couldnt find anything, also I changed the knox sensors (under the inlet manifold) and had a look/feel around things then and nothing jumped out.

Ive read about gearbox/driveshaft knocks and non of these symptons are what im experiencing.

Imin the process of uploading a video, although you have to listen really carefully to hear it. My ears are well tuned into it now so I notice it straight away.

Ive been on top of oil changes roughly every 5k and its in good nick for its age, other than a couple of injectors its done me well.

Thanks in advance, hopefully someone can help

Any common ball joints in front wheels that I could look into? A mechanic friend is sure is something related to those...

FYI found the cause to be the front suspension "top hats". Approx £40 each, fairly straight forward to replace DIY.
