Hows everyone's oil consumption?

Im wondering what everyone's oil consumption is like, if any. I've got a 07 335 with about 131k miles now. Turbos were replaced at 45k under warranty (complained about waste gate rattle) and have been tuned with JB4 since then.

Currently needing to add about 0.5-0.75 quarts in between oil changes and I do my own changes with Mobil 1 0w40 every 7500 miles.

Haven't taken the undercover off the car recently so I don't know if theres a leak or not. I did replace the oil cooler housing gasket about 1 year ago bc of a leak - decided not to do the oil filter housing gasket at the time bc I didn't see any issues. Still don't see any issues.

Other than the consumption, no other issues with the car. Drive it hard everyday on map 5 without misfires. Rest of car is up to date with maintenance. Don't plan on spending money to chase this issue but wondering how everyone else is doing now that many of us now own a 10 year old car with over 100k miles. A lot cheaper for me to add a bit of oil every now and then especially with how cheap walmart is and with all these mobil 1 rebates.

How long are your oil change intervals? Car should not "consume" oil, I'll bet something is leaking or seeping oil.

I'm running motul at 141k miles, replace every 7k-ish, and not long ago had oil pan gasket, rear main seal, and (for the third time) ofhg/Tstat gaskets replaced for seeping/leaking. After plugging everything up my oil level doesn't budge. I also replaced vc and gasket at 110k. I don't track the car, so not sure what effect that would have.

Our 535 with 34K milesi= 0, our 2007 335i with 88K miles= 1 quart every 1500 miles and our 2008 335i with 54K = 1 quart every 5000 miles.

I change the oil and filter at 5K miles or 9 months. Whichever comes first.

Incorrect. This powertrain will undoubtedly use up some oil. On the n54, alot of the oil gets recirculated as vapours back into the intake tract (hence why people have catch cans). The consumption amount will vary from one car to the next depending on your driving habits and the condition of your car. Even if the low oil warning does not come on, you will notice near your oil change interval it is not going to be sitting at max (and if it is, you are overfilling)

OP, 0.5 quart is perfectly normal between oil changes. That is about the same as mine with semi aggressive driving.

Most I've burned/ lost to blow by is .5 qt between 5k changes with Mobil one 0w 40. 21 psi 115k miles. You're fine "losing" a tiny bit like that but with the miles id bet you have a small seep or leak somewhere too

I also have an 07 335i with ~ 150k km on the odo. It had been consuming oil at a rate of 1L / 1000 km. It has had a valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket replaced with minimal change to consumption.

My indy told me to change my oci to 5k km for the next few oil changes to see if anything changes. I've just recently performed my second 5k km oil change and have seen 0 consumption in almost 3k km. It's concerning since no dip stick means relying on the oil level sensor.

I may perform an oil change soon to do a manual measurement of the oil.

I burn very little oil at 149k, probably .5qt every oil change. My oil gauge very rarely drops in between oil changes. I use Liquimoly 5w-30 changed at 5k miles.

My change interval is about 10K ,miles and I use short of a quart between changes.
Anything less than 1-2 quarts in 15K miles is normal for these engines.

I don't bun any oil, but I leak a half a quart every year from my turbo lines. I'll replace them if/when the turbos need replacing.

2008 335 XI with 100,000 miles. prior to my last complete oci, I had never lost oil between changes. in this last change I dropped 1/2 quart in 4000 miles. that said, during that time, I replaced valve cover gasket, valve cover and oil filter housing gasket. I also had switched from one brand of oil to another. finally, I installed an oil catch can.

Approx half a quart every 7500 miles is great.

Unless I have a leak, oil is usually added during oil changes at 8,000kms

thats good to hear everyone! Ill probably take off the underbody cover during the next oil change and inspect the bottom of the car to see if theres any oil leaking anywhere.

previous n54 ( Oct 2006 build - was a FP Buy back from cali- which I had from 14k miles until 130K - and always did 7,500 mile OC and never hammered on it before OIL temp got to 170.), went from .5 quart every 3500 miles to 1 full quart in 1200 miles all in a period of about 30000 miles - from 85K until 120K. Driving routine never really changed during that period. Always juiced in someway. Had a first gen OCC. NEW owner says its not using ANY oil. Boost is now stock. But I returned it to stock level a full 2 months before and it still used oil at the same basically 1qt every 1500 that I saw.

New n54 has not shown ANY signs of oil use. 5000 miles (purchased with 12.8K miles - ) and 0 down according to OB. Same driving routine, and basically now same mods.

YMMV.

Could be a lot of factors for loosing oil like: oil leak, PCV, turbos, valve stems, oil brand, oil grade, oil change intervals, driving conditions and driving habits. So the results will vary. For those saying their doesn't loose any oil. Drive it harder. Take it to the track. Post results later. All engines will loose oil. Not just n54. Reasons why would differ.

2007 BMW 335i with 145k kms. Owned since 128k kms. Oil change every 7k kms = 0.25 to 0.5 quart of oil consumption according to the electronic oil level sensor.
