Broken Threads...need advice
Hello everyone,
My X3 didn't come with the transmission skid plate since the threads rusted/broke off at some point, so the plate just went missing. I got a new skid plate, but am trying to figure out how to attach it. The threads are pretty much gone, and I tried drilling a hole where the thread is after shaving it off with a dremel, but the bit would not go through (not seen in the photos). A guy with an old BMW advised me get self tapping screws from Home Depot, and use these to create new holes where the threads are. Do you all think this is alright? Here are the pictures (the thread is the orange rusted looking thing) View post on imgur.com View post on imgur.com |

Looking at the parts diagrams I'm not seeing that rail section with the stud as replaceable so the drill and tap method might be your to repair. Make sure you get a nice kit (example the Schwaben Metric Thread Repair Kit) that comes with threading inserts to help add a little extra strength to the rail area.
