Exhaust Manifold studs
Hi All, I'm about to transfer my turbos's from one motor to another. Both engines are on engine stands.
My concerns are what needs to be replaced,like washers,Orings,gaskets and my exhaust manifold studs. I did order Orings for oil return lines and coolant lines. And is there a sequence for tightening down the exhaust manifold. Thanks |

No point skimping on 5 cent o rings, should replace whatever you touch, gaskets should always be replaced when touched aswell.
For the studs I'm assuming since the motor is on stands you removed the turbos without removing the studs? If you really wanted you could reuse them but I wouldn't, anything exposed to exhaust temps gets pretty seized up and the threads could be damaged from the removal process. It's really not a big deal removing and replacing studs, just double nut them, tighten the nuts against eachother, then use the bottom nut to pull the stud. Same works in reverse installing studs. |

Similar Topic, Changing turbos in the next month... About the waterpump, i am not having issues with it been replaced by the dealer few years ago, i know most folks changes it, can it be reused without dramas assuming it doesnt crack pulling it off.

Technically should replace them, but manifold nuts should be replaced. Exhaust manifold studs are external torx, no need for jam nut or stud socket. Some can be less than willing to come out and they're in an aluminum head, so be mindful when pulling them. On the flip side, some may come out with the nut. Torque them down in a criss-cross pattern from inside to out.
A lot of people do water pumps while they're in there since it's a lot of the same labor. If your pump is at an age it's likely to fail, might be worthwhile, but certainly not a requirement. |

Those torx heads are pretty small and can round if you slip your socket a couple times cranking on a stub on stud. They work much better going in then out after 100k miles.

I used new exhaust and intake studs and nuts on my replacement engine and didn't have any issues using the E/Torx socket for removal and install on the 75k mile engine. Bit hard to get a definitive answer on the torque specs for those but I think I went with 20Nm.
The only thing in that area that gave a me a little bit of grief were the new fat round gaskets (6 of) that go between the exhaust ports in the head and the turbo manifold. They have a propensity to want to delaminate or unwind, so do your best not to handle those anymore that you really need to. I also used a nice rubber friendly gel lubricant on the new o-rings for the 8 turbo coolant lines...it made the reinstall of the o-rings and those lines relatively easy. Download the Bentley manual if you haven't already...there are some good tips and tricks in there, like how best to reinstall the heat shields for example. |
