2006 BMW 330i ZF Trans problem
Transmission operates perfectly except for shift from 4th to 5th gear under higher RPM or acceleration. If you do not accelerate quickly it shifts perfect. It acts as though it misses the gear until the RPMs drop and then it will shift. Indy says clutches, but I am not so sure. Valve body or solenoids???

mileage is 200K. I have only put about 10K on this car and I do not know when/if the fluid was changed.

What you describe sounds like a problem with a solenoid in the Magatronics unit. You could try a fluid "dump and fill" but I give it 50/50 that it will help, with the ZF fluid running about $20.00 a liter, it will not be cheep. Could be time to find a real automatic transmission mechanic. Try calling California Transmissions. They helped me a long time ago, CTSC - California Transmission Supply Company. For the record, I am not a mechanic but I have 200,000 miles on my ZF and have dumped the fluid three times. good luck |

Don't forget that you might be able to read an error code stored in the TCU and the transmission adaptations might show something is wrong as well.

Has anyone had or heard of this issue where it only affects the 4th to 5th shift?

Sounds like you are experiencing shift flare, which is common on this ZF trans.
It's commonly caused by worn sealing sleeve/valvebody seals or clogged or faulty solenoids. Each gear transition has it's own solenoid. This causes issues with pressure and the transmission is not able to generate enough pressure to properly engage clutch discs, which ultimately causes them to slip. Another common symptom is a hard 2-1 shift as you're coming to a stop. |

But more often than not, the seals and solenoid are the culprits. For solenoid issues, there are typically shadow faults stored. Normally they have to do with gear/clutch ratio errors. An aftermarket scan tool may not be able to pull shadow faults. Shadow faults are a BMW thing. Then there is universal fault history and hard faults (P codes or manufacture specific). If you have those shadow faults, it's a good indication that the solenoids and seals may be bad. Valve body rarely needs to be rebuilt. Just replace the solenoids, seals, fluid, and pan/filter. Have a read below. The HP21 is very similar to the HP19. https://sayyarti.wordpress.com/2015/...ission-issues/ Last edited by matteblue3er; 10-18-2017 at 02:22 PM.. |

Now that I realize. I also have hick up on my tranny when 1st to 2nd at times but I want to believe this is due to a bad coil? I know im due for new coils. I already had to replaced one since it died on me.
The only way I ll find out is by replacing them which I am planning on doing soon... ![]() |

Because these transmissions shift by solinoids, that would be a good place to start. If your feeling sluggish thru all the gears, then fluid would be the first. Trans fluid should always be changed during its life, I like to go every 30k, it's cheap insurance.
