Purchased a litre of Penrite LL01
Oil cap says Castrol. Asked for Castrol at the store, the sales guy says never use Castrol? asked local BM workshop who said Penrite was ok.

So what should I buy? As long as it's BMW certified LL01 it's fine?

Since youre purchasing a 1L bottle of guessing your doing a top up? IDeally you dont mix certain brand oils so you top up with the same oil.. (guessing you dont know whats in there?)

The castrol on the fill cap is just that bmw had a partnership with castrol (essentially a marketing exercise, and they've since dropped castrol and gone to shell 2 years ago?) penrite will be fine to use!

I was under the impression mixing oil brands didn’t matter as they are all a synthetic mix anyway and the additives will just mix in and evenutally be used up.

Sol was right. Oils ain't oils.

As I understand you have topped up your engine oil with 1L of Penrite LL-01.
The grade wasn't mentioned.

If you have to top up an engine oil then firstly select the same base stock (mineral or synthetic), specification (LL-01) then select the same brand, as the additive package will likely be the same or compatible, then select the oil grade classification (5W-40).

Also keep the amount used to top up to a minimum. A triboligist would likely advise to never mix oils however at certain times it may be unavoidable.

The caveat to this would be to only apply it to engine oils.

In November 2014 BMW AG announced that from the beginning of 2015 Shell would be the official supplier replacing Castrol.

As I have mentioned before, anyone who postulates one type of oil, or brand in this case, is better than another without UOA's is uninformed.

What also needs to be considered is why did the engine consume oil?

Thanks for the info guys. I noticed my level had dropped since buying the car a week ago. It has since not dropped any further.
Yeah I have no idea what oil is in the car. I bought 10W40. As yet have not added.
I'll see how it goes.

I was thinking the worst with an oil leak but on further inspection I'm hopeful it's just the oil filter housing. An easy home fix if Youtube is correct.

If you have no idea whats in there then likely have no idea when it was last changed
So me thinks time for an oil change lel

10w is going to be too thick, you want 5w40

That's acceptable to use.

It meets ACEA A3 which exceeds LL-01 except that if you were to use it as a complete fill then the OIC (Oil Interval Change) would be shorter due to oxidative thickening.

Ok My mistake. I did buy 5W40. Still not topped up. 2 weeks to get the car in and I have nowhere I can get the car hi enough to get under to drain the oil.

I've still not added the 1 litre of oil I bought. My gauge has been steady at 1/2 for the past week.
Why does it appear the leak has stopped?
It's in the shop Monday.

Possible the last owner over filled and the extra pressure forced oil past a seal? The engine still seems happy. No codes

Definitely not. Sounds like you have a leak somewhere.

After topping up, the gauge will depend on how long the engine is running. If you top up and then check the gauge on a cold engine it will take sometime. But if you go for a 5-10 min drive it should show actual.

The oil level isnt very accurate. If its near minimum it could read full, then min. Usually better off just keeping track of it yourself by pouring known quantities of oil into the engine

Yeah I have a leak. It's in the shop today. hopefully just the filter housing. Looks to be pooling just behind that.
Hopefully the damage isn't too bad. Cars getting a look over too. Should have done that before I bought it.
