N55 battery replacement
So my battery is well on it?s way out and temperatures dropping in New England, so I? decided it?s time for a new batt. Does anyone have any recommendation for what brand ? And can I register it with my JB4 or mhd ? I?ve never changed my battery on my own so any useful knowledge will be helpful.

- Get a *really* long extension. The battery hold-down bracket is very annoying to install
- Use tape to secure the bolt for the hold-down bracket to your socket before screwing it in. It'll save you a lot of time. - AC Delco, Autocraft, Duralast, Exide, and Bosch are good choices, but most batteries are made by somewhere between 3 and 4 companies. It's best to go with convenience: if you buy a new battery and it dies, you can swap it easily with no hassle at a local auto parts store. If I had to do it again, I'd go with something from AutoZone or Advance. My new battery died two weeks after and I had to find a specific dealer of my battery to swap it. Thankfully, you can swap AC Delco batteries at GM dealers, so that was helpful at least...but way out of the way. |

I don't think MHD or JB4 can register batteries, I replaced mine myself last fall and the long extension is a must as mentioned. After shopping around I just decided to go to the dealer and buy one, that way I knew it was the exact battery for my car ( Size, CCA etc...) and the warranty is just as good as the aftermarket imo. Never regretted doing so.

You'll have slower cranks when it's cold, modules may have codes saying things like battery voltage below 11.9v, the "increased discharge rate" warning may go off from time to time, and your cold cranking amps will be low.

If you're replacing with the same battery, all you need is adaptation reset which you can do with MHD.
Otherwise, you'll need INPA to register it.

To clarify the comment above, to register with MHD, it doesn't have to be an identical battery, it just needs to have a similar Ah rating at the previous battery.

I replaced mine with one from Walmart using the info below. And I used BMWLogger to register the battery. I've had this battery for about 2 yrs now and it's still working great.
I wish I could give proper credit to who wrote this or which forum it came from, but I've saved this info for my own future reference. See below. ) When choosing a replacement battery you want to make sure that your car is coded for the correct TYPE of battery (AGM OR NON-AGM). 2) Next you want to make sure that your car is coded to the same AH as listed on the battery. 3) You want to makes sure the Reserve capacity is about the same as the battery you are removing, this is tied to the AH rating using the following formula: AH = ((RC/2) + 16). 4) Finally, you want to make sure that the CCA and CA are equal to or GREATER than the battery you are replacing. The easiest solution for 99% of e90 owners will just be a simple like for like battery replacement of about the same Reserve Capacity. PLUS LEFT / MINUS RIGHT My battery was White (Non-AGM) 80 aH 640 A 640 CCA 140 RC |
