Squeeling noise
At cold start the noise isnt there but after driving for a while the coming to a stop or park and just idling i can hear a squeeling noise. Some where in the right side of the engine bay it seems.
Any idea what it could be? |

Probably the crankcase breather on the valve cover. Next time it happens open the oil fill cap and see if it changes or goes away. You will need to replace the entire valve cover though unfortunately if that is the problem.
There is a repair kit that is far from ideal but is a cheaper alternative. The amount of time and effort just isn't worth it in my opinion though.

Somehow the noise is more noticeable inside the car or the front and left wheelwell of the car Diagnosed it to a pulley but dont know which one. Most likely a bearing? And the squeeling only happens when the car is warmed up around 200 farenheit Last edited by ches170; 08-06-2017 at 12:58 PM.. |

Do you have a smart phone? If so take a vid and post it up. If it's a pulley, pull the belt and spin each pulley. You'll know which one by feel. They should spin smooth, if there's any that have a "gritty" feel or worse you should replace them.

Welp changed the belt and belt tensioner and that didnt solve the problem.
Went into another indy shop and found out the noise is coming from the undercarriage... arouns the transmission or the transmission.... so now i got a squeeling noise coming from the transmission area. Noise only pops up when engine is warm and idle. Any idea? Help? |

This is from the N52 engine wiki page. The ticking noise of Hydraulic valve adjuster is a known problem with the N52 engine fitted with manufacturing date prior to November 2008. An occasional ticking or rattling noise from the HVA elements may occur during cold engine starts or frequent short-distance driving, recently known after the engines reach 50,000 miles. In these situations, the HVA elements may not yet have been supplied with sufficient amounts of air-free oil. This condition will not cause any damage to the engine, and usually remedies itself with a longer driving distance or operating times at full operating temperature. BMW dealers' first response is to perform HVA bleeding procedure, however this procedure seems not to resolve the matter. The second attempt to solve this problem is a replacement with improved HVA parts, however this procedure also does not fully address the problem. Finally, a newly designed cylinder head replacement solves the ticking noise problem for vehicles under warranty. Vehicles produced after November, 2008 have already been fitted with the improved cylinder heads that resolve this HVA problem

Then it is your crank case ventilation valve, which for your 328i is integrated to the valve cover, which means valve cover replacement. There is a repair kit solved on eBay but involves plastic surgery.
The code is most likely because opening the oil fill cap you introduced unmetered air while engine is running, expected. The noise is said to be coming from crankshaft seals, the ventilation valve is allowing too much intake vacuum into crankcase resulting in air being sucked in around crankshaft seals. If it was difficult to open the oil cap due too a lot of vacuum it is another indication that ventilation valve is your problem. Somewhat common, search you will find more info, even videos of the noise. |

If you have a code reader you can reset it. If you leave it alone those codes clear themselves too after computer decides it is no longer happening. It takes at least a couple of days driving though.

Went to an Indy saying it might be valve cover. They measure the crank case vacuum at 18inches normally it should be around 12. Also the oil filter housing is leaking so it hast be changed.
Valve cover about 500 $ with 500$ labor And labor for the oil filter housing seal is also about 400$ So all in all itll be about 1400 Is the price fair? Well I only had the valve cover replaced so that put me back a thousand dollars. I guess I will be doing the the ofh gasket myself or if i find a shop thatll do it under 150(goodluck) Last edited by ches170; 08-30-2017 at 01:58 PM.. |
